Hi, I'm in Calgary on a Speakout wireless data plan attempting to reliably connect and switch over to Voip for all calls, incoming and outgoing. I currently have a Voip.ms account and would like to connect reliably with one of the many good Android Sip clients. I've played with CSipsimple and Mizodroid but am having some problems configuring the settings to allow for smooth reliable voice transmission over 3G. Can anyone out there preferably from Calgary share there Voip setup with me particularly what Android client they use and what settings have been manipulated to work smoothly with Speakout 3G?

Thanks
Mark

pick GSM or G.729 codec(if it is supported by your app).

Don't use G.711u, it relies on very reliable data connection.

Roger's 3G network is a bit iffy for 'reliable' VOIP.

GSM should give you reasonable good result with the 'GSM' voice quality

GSM is awful because it has weak jitter tolerance. So it is a poor choice for a 3G data connection. Cellular phones also use GSM for a codec, but that environment is a lot less hostile to voice than 3G/EDGE data.

Use either SKYPE or a client the can use the G.729 codec. If you have a SIP provider and a SIP client that supports the ILBC codec, even better.

Skype is preferred because it uses a proprietary codec designed to navigate through bad 3G, and there is a better chance to actually get incoming calls working. It might still not be good enough though.

I only use GSM codec on my iPhone4(linphone via voip.ms) and it is perfectly ok for those occasions I used it on the road using the bell network.

Though I have stressed multiple times that VOIP is simply for non-critical things especially on cell data network.

The cheapest option is to get a Wind PAYO with unlimited incoming(free) and setup voip.ms dialback, if voice calling is essential and lots of minutes are needed.

Many swear by skype but I found it to be overhyped as the few times I knew the other side was from Skype-out, the quality was awful.

use freephoneline, you can get everything free.
for 3G, you can't count very reliable. but for the price, it is quite worth for it. I used freephoneline for years on my cell phone. I very happy with it.

I am a happy freephonelone.ca customer also. There is a free version, but it requires an awful windows softphone. You would have to pay $50 for the SIP settings, but after that, no bills. Best $50 I ever spent!

You are not going to get good VOIP through 3G, but your best chance is to use the G.729 codec. Even then, the service will be marginal in quality.
