I'm looking for a phone that works well with the speakout data plan. I need to replace my old Windows mobile phone, which work well but has some hardware issues. I have tried a blakberry with some limited success, but I would like more functionality, specifically the Google apps. (mail, maps, sync) Has anyone here used a Nokia Symbian phone with speakout data, and have you been able to get apps to work? Thanks for any information.

I doubt there is nothing wrong with you WM phone, you might have a slight misconfiguration. You need to set the ssl proxy settings also, with port 80 instead of the standard 443.
BTW, Nokia phones work with SO just fine. I have a nice stable tether through bluetooth, no wires is nice! I think I will set up a tutorial in the next coming weeks.

I had my Windows Mobile phone working good with the data, but the speaker/ringer is flakey and it didn't ring most of the time. If I could get the same data functionality out of a symbian phone like the Nokia E71 that would be great. I'm also open to another WM phone if I can find a good deal. I'm too cheap to spring for an Iphone, and I'm not a huge fan of touchscreen devices.
Thanks for your help.

I'm currently using a Nokia Surge (that's also for sale) with SO's 10/month UMB plan. I"m running the following:
Gmail app
Nimbuzz (google talk and msn messenger)
Opera Mini
Google maps
Ovi store and maps
Gmail i think updates every 30 mins or so unless you do manual syncing.
Nimbuzz seems instantaneous
hope this helps

Dude! The Nokia E63!!!! I've had mine for a year and I'm still amazed at how much it rocks most other affordable smart phones out there.
Newegg is selling them for about $160. Which, let me remind you, is the cost of an 8 gig iPod Nano. Except it does everything a freakin iPhone does, only better.
You won't regret it.
Symbian 3rd gen.
I routinely have 20 tabs open on Opera mini and run all the google apps all the time, including youtube on speakout data. Battery life is amazing. I download The Economist audio edition every week with Symtorrent and listen to it right on the phone.
It makes my girlfriend jealous.

Ok, so maybe one of these Nokias is what I need. I am looking to use my Speakout SIM in an unlocked phone in order to do the following:
MUST HAVES
1. Access gmail
2. Be able to twitter from the phone
3. Be a fairly durable phone as I am prone to dropping them (which is why I got speakout in the first place - last phone dropped and shattered)
NICE TO HAVES
4. camera + ideally video if possible.
5. would love a QUERTY keyboard
Is the Nokia e63 or e71 from newegg.ca my best bet? Was about to buy a blackberry curve from tigerdirect.ca but then read something that I couldn't get gmail or twitter....so now confused at what I should do.
Oh and my budget is ideally under $250.
Any advice you can offer is much appreciated!

The main difference between the e63 and e71 is that the e71 has a better camera, and it has GPS.
I have not tested how durable my e71 is, but it looks pretty solid. You should have a case for it, you can get on on ebay for $5.
There are little things I love about my e71, you can take a picture, and upload it to flickr on the spot. it takes about a minute to upload a picture, because speak out data is not fast, but it nice to be able to do.
I currently use my e71 as a bluetooth tethered modem for my laptop. Browsing from a phone rather sucks, much better from a laptop.
The e71 take video shots, but they are not the best quality.
You can do pretty much everything google offers. I see at least 2 twitter clients for symbian.

But you're sure twitter will work? Because I saw a few threads saying it won't -- eg this one:
https://www.speakoutwireless.ca/speak/technical-service-details/twitter-long-code/?value=twitter&type=1&include=1&search=1&ret=all
If yes then probably leaning toward the e63 if camera + GPS are the main differences vs the e71. I won't use the latter and the former I'm not sure I can justify for $100 difference in price. Both seem to have very good reviews online... the e63 is also cheaper than the BB curve i was looking at.
Anyway the main thing is I want to be SURE the gmail + twitter will work before I buy anything. So just want to confirm. If they do and there are no advantages to going with a BB then I'll go Nokia. (Iphone is too expensive for me and knowing me I'll break the thing. Don't like touchscreens either.)

I was not 100% certain twitter would work, because I am a bit of a twitter newbie. But the proof is in the pudding. Tweets by bridonca Oh yeah, you can access twitter with your mobile via m.twitter.com
That other link you gave me just offers another way to send twitters. through SMS messaging. It seems pretty cool in that you can use stupid phones that can do SMS, but those text message costs add up. If you have a working web browser and a $10 unlimited data plan, that is clearly the better way to go. I will not go and test the Symbian clients for you. I am not that into twitter to bother! 🙂

Hi everyone, I ended up buying the Nokia E63 and set up the monthly internet access with Speakout.
Seems to work pretty well so far - but I am wondering if it's possible to sync my email (I use gmail) instead of having to go through the internet browser to access gmail.
I ask this because gmail through the browser won't let me create any attachments (images). And I read here that you can only do that through the sync route: http://www.google.me/support/f.....#038;hl=en
I tried to go to the "Set up Email" section that appears on my phone screen but it didn't work. Any tips?
Basically I want a way to be able to post my camera photos to the web... can't seem to figure out how to do this.

I just got an E71 and I am syncing my google account (gmail, contacts and calendar) with RoadSync. RoadSync uses the gmail exchange server to sync google to your phone. So far this is working pretty good. I tried the nokia "mail for exchange 3.0" which also syncs mail, but with less options(but free), but had some trouble syncing consistently. I have not tried sending attachments with RoadSync yet, but it is suppposed to handle them.
I also tried ProfiMail, which seems like a full featured email client, but it seemed to have trouble with the Speakout connection, worked fine via WiFi. (could have been me though)

For all you e71ers out there, RoadSync is available right now for $4.99 at the OVI Store. Now, even though RoadSync seems to say you can pick-up multiple accounts, that seems to be a bit of an exaggeration however there is a tricky work around using gmail. Set it up with Google as the server and use Google's "Mail Fetcher" option to have google pick-up other accounts for you. Works on SO data (WIFI too, but SO data was the key). Can be push, or 5,10,15 minutes, etc or manual.
So glad I read up on all this before I bought a phone. I am loving my E71 unlocked.

Has anyone had trouble even getting INTO the Ovi store from your phone?
As mentioned above I have an unlocked Nokia E63 with speakout Sim card and would really like to get RoadSync (or any other app) in order to Sync my email... one of the main reasons I got this phone was for Tweeting / uploading photos from my phone into Twitter/Twitpic/Facebook etc.
HOWEVER - every time I try to access the Ovi store it gets stuck on "loading" and I have to just close it down. This happens even when I leave it for HOURS - over 24 hours I've left it with no change.
I've also tried going online (from a computer) and sending the app to my phone but this has never worked either.
Can anyone tell me what to do here? I'm REALLY frustrated and not sure if the problem is the phone, Ovi, Speakout or something I need to do....
Any help you can give would be great.

I do not know if I will be helpful, but here are my thoughts.
I stayed away from OVI because it was just too flaky and cumbersome for me to stomach, I heard recently Nokia is shutting down or has shut down the web service where you upload your pictures. You do not need OVI thankfully. I usually use Nokia's default browser and a decent wifi connection to download files. In some cases, I had to download the file onto my computer, copy it to the Nokia memory card, and then run it from there once inserted into the Nokia. This is another area Nokia needs to work on.
I do not know if you can even get roadsync to work though speakout's proxy. I would test it out on a wifi connect first, an if it works, then try speakout. I do not have enough knowledge about roadsync to give you an opinion on it's capabilities.
As a workaround, is it possible to forward your exchange mail to a gmail account, and then access your gmail through the browser?
I upload pictures I take with my Nokia E71 to Flickr, using the post to web option. Once on Flickr, I could just link to Twitter/Twitpic/Facebook etc via the opera web interface. I use tabs on Opera quite a bit for that sort of stuff.

I use road sync and love it. I use it to sync my gmail account, which I have set to also pick up my POP email from my work domain. It also syncs all my contacts which means I can maintain all my phone numbers, etc on Google and then within minutes all the changes are reflected on my phone. Also love that it syncs my Google calendar, so items I add to my phone show up on my desk then next morning. When I first looked at Roadsync they wanted 49.95, but found it on the OVI store for 4.95. Best $5 I've ever spent. For the record, my E71 on SO is the best solution ever for me. Picked up the e71 at newegg.ca and am looking forward to trying it out in the USA. Any suggestions out there for a good PAYG plan with long top up and a small data option.
Oops, I see that a good portion of this was a repeat of my post from September. Sorry.
