I'm not sure which forum I should be in (this one or the Technical Services one). If it's the wrong one, please let me know and I'll move it or could one of the moderators please move it for me? Thanks.
Now, my question - I was about to cut my regular SO SIM into MicroSIM size and did a little investigating and now have some questions. The SIM I'm using now is old, probably about 4 yrs old. I got a free phone (and SIM) as part of last year's Christmas bonus deal. When I compared my SIM with the Christmas one, I noticed a big difference in the size of the little 'gold' chip in the SIMs. My old one has a much larger gold chip. So my question is - if I cut it down to MicroSIM size, will it work in my new phone? Or should I transfer my number to the newer SIM first and then cut that one to MicroSIM size?
I'm a bit gunshy because I already got burned in a similar fashion with a Telus SIM. We had an old Telus SIM that didn't work in a Samsung S3 after I cut it to MicroSIM size because they changed the size/configuration of the gold chip part when they switched to LTE. Obviously I don't have to worry about LTE for SO but I'm still concerned because of the size difference.
Has anyone encountered this situation? What did you do to make it work? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

It generally does not matter if you cut the gold contacts on the edges. What does matter is that the SIM is correctly cut. And the chance of success is much higher if you use a good SIM cutter.
I would probably cut the new SIM to size, and then register it. If it works, then I would put money in it or transfer the account over.
