I just found this post so I tried it on my wife's phone last night. She's using a iPhone 4S jailbroken on 5.1.1 on Speakout. She has the UMB data activated. I edited the plist file as per the instructions, turned iMessage & Facetime off, rebooted, and tried turning it back on. For iMessage, it says "verifying" for her phone number and is grayed out. Her email address works though. For Facetime, it kept turning off when I tried to turn it on.
How long does it usually take to activate? Or does this workaround no longer work?

whenever I try flicking on iMessage on, it instantly turns off.
I had exactly the same problem at the beginning of October. I just kept trying things (rebooting phone, resyncing, waiting a few hours, signing out my apple id, etc), and eventually I was able to get it to stay on. It's been working ever since even though it says activation unsuccessful.
Then, tonight, I thought I'd try it again. Went through the steps again (change number in carrier.plist, imsg & facetime off, reboot, imsg & facetime on), and voila, it works! iMessage successfully activated and now shows my number. Facetime, too. The facetime activation took longer...a few minutes as opposed to a few seconds with imsg, but hey, who's counting.
Good luck.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!
just wanted to confirm that this worked for me this morning. was able to activate imessages and facetime, although I haven't had a chance to test facetime yet.
funny thing is I'm pretty sure I stumbled onto this post back in September when I first signed up for Speakout with my jailbroken iphone, and it didn't work. had the same problem described above with the slider not working. but worked like a charm on the first try this time
thank you thank you thank you! not having imessages was really becoming a pain since all my friends and family have iphones. free texts from here on out! cheers

Nevermind. I'm an idiot and got overly excited. It's not actually working now.
Number never shows up only email.
Any ideas? Do you think restoring my phone would help? If I've already messed with the plist file a few times?
Just to be clear, once this goes through, it does or does not allow you to send an iMessage over 3G? Or is this workaround strictly to have your number associated with ur iMessage...

Unfortunately imessaging uses ports other than 80, which is why it only works over wifi.
Ports FaceTime iMessage
80 (TCP) √ √
443 (TCP) √ √
3478 through 3497 (UDP) √ -
5223 (TCP) √ √
16384 through 16387 (UDP) √ -
16393 through 16402 (UDP) √ -
I was trying to send some texts while on 3g the other day, and had to turn off imessaging in settings to allow me to send to people I'd usually use imsg with. A drag, but at least this time it turned back on right away.

ah, okay. too bad. that's what I thought, just wishful thinking.
having gotten used to imessage on a previous phone contract, and finding it super convenient to communicate with friends and family in different parts of the world, it's probably my biggest negative about using SO UMB. that and no voip. everything else is great.
i wish there was a Toggle for imessage that you could add to SBSettings, since i'm constantly turning it on and off, but there doesn't seem to be one

For those who have trouble Activating iMessage or FaceTime using provided instructions follow them but make sure you are signed out of use your apple ID with them and they are switched off. Then reboot but quickly when it turns on and says searching get to either iMessage or FaceTime settings and switch it on when it goes to ROGERS then wait you will see your carrier switch to SpeakOut 5seconds later but that's okay the activation was already sent before the carrier info changed from OTA takes about a min or two for the activation to complete.
Tested: iPhone 4S iOS 6.1

Decided to try this again but it still doesn't work when I reboot the phone and try to set "On" for iMessage. It just flicks off instantly.
