Hey,
It seems that both 7-11 SpeakOut and PetroCan are having a sale, possibly trying to clear out their phone inventories. My guess is that we'll see some new phones coming soon.
So I began searching around the Engadgetmobile.com website to see what the new budget (aka meant for emerging markets) Nokia's are like.
Hopefully we'll get the Nokia 1650 instead of the 1208 to replace the 1600, as this has a much larger screen and a bit better battery life (although both of them have much longer talk times than almost any other phone I've seen). And it comes with a built-in FM radio as a nice extra.
As well, maybe we'll get the Nokia 2600 Classic to replace the 2610. Although this phone's price point falls perfectly where the 2610 is priced ($100) and is meant to be a low-cost phone, it's loaded with features. It's
I haven't found any new low-end Nokia flip phones. Flip phones are not Nokia's specialty, but are generally very popular, so SpeakOut needs at least one to be able to compete. Anyone know of any new Nokia flips coming soon?

This is not 'in topic' I guess, but I'm trying to purchase a 7-11 phone for my son who has recently sustained a serious head injury. I Have had a 7-11 phone for a year & am very happy , so far. I understand the deal from last summer is to be repeated this year..any clue about when ?
I would like to get my lad a 'fancier' phone than the basic 1600 which I have. I was just told @ my local 7-11 in Burnaby BC, they have nothing but the 1600 & it's $100 with a paltry $10.00 air time...not so good.
The 2600 or 2610 sound good.
Any ideas ?
Thanks

The 7-11 guys at your Burnaby store are probably mistaken. The regular price of the 1600 is $75, and my understanding is that with their current promotion that price should also include an additional $25 worth of airtime. Try another 7-11 store. For some reason it seems that 7-11 doesn't seem to support SpeakOut as well as it could (which explains the need for sites like this one).
I read somewhere else on this site that the "$75 off the price of a phone with the purchase of $100 of airtime" promotion should be returning around the middle of the year. If memory serves me correct, last year it started in May. So, if you want to wait until then, you can.
Personally, I think the 1600 is possibly the best phone currently offered by 7-11. I bought 2 of them myself during the last "free phone" promotion - one I gave to my girlfriend, and the other was meant for me, but I ended up giving the phone w/o the SIM to my brother. While the 1600 lacks any features, it's phone functions are surprisingly one of the best out there - great reception, great call quality, etc.
Here's a great review of the 1600

The Nokia 2610 ($100) seems very similar to the 1600 in terms of features (or lack of the). You're really not getting anything extra for the additional $25 cost. One common complaint I've heard of the 2610 is that the screen is incredibly reflective and some people find it very hard to see what's on the screen when they're outdoors. For this reason I wouldn't get it for your son. That plus I rarely see any 7-11 stores stocking it. Next time you're at a PetroCanada station they may have a 2610 on display (PetroCan Mobile is run by the same company as SpeakOut) if you're curious about it.
The 2600 Classic is currently not offered by Speakout, or any cell phone company in Canada. It was just my guess that it's a phone that 7-11 may one day sell.
The only other phone that 7-11 sells is the Nokia 2760 ($125). It's a flip phone (which many people prefer) and has a few additional features like a camera (which is as good as any cellphone camera, meaning it kinda stinks) and an FM radio. Although the reviews I've read have not been that good.

Alternatively, you can go on Ebay and purchase any GSM phone (make sure it's GSM) that is either unlocked or locked to Rogers. Then the sky is the limit in terms of what features you want and what you'd like to spend.
My suggestion is to find a store that knows about the current promotion and pick up a Nokia 1600 for $75. Then in May or June or whenever the 'good' promotion comes around you can buy some airtime (which you'll need to buy anyways) and get a free or almost free (depending on the phone) upgrade at that point. Or you can just wait until then.

I would be leery of places like eBay because the phone could easily be stolen. Also you're getting a used phone with a battery that may no longer hold a full charge. I'd look at a place like puremobile.ca who sell new or refurbished phones, e.g. a basic quadband Moto V188 for $75.

Just to follow up on my original post.
I was hoping that SpeakOut would get the Nokia 1650 as their low-end model, but it doesn't look that that's going to happen. Their sister company, PetroCanada Mobile is getting the Nokia 1208 as the low-end model, so my guess is that SpeakOut will get the same.
Also, instead of SpeakOut getting the Nokia 2600 Classic, it looks like they might get the Nokia 2630. The phones are almost the same, except the 2630 is a little less colourful, and it just has the GSM bands for North America, so no quad-band phone here.

Thanks for the info Leo.
I stopped by a 7-11 tonight and noticed that the new page in their information binder mentioned the Nokia 5200 (coming soon for $150), but no mention of the Nokia 2630 that PetroCanada recently got 🙁
My brother recently got a Nokia 5300 from Rogers, and it's a pretty cool phone. But I think the 5300 has a few more buttons on the side that the 5200 has (those buttons control the mp3 player).

Interesting news about the 5200. I'd been thinking of getting an unlocked 5300 (refurb) from factorydirect ($120). As I understand the two phones are almost identical but the 5300 has a better camera and display. Of course, that way it doesn't come with the Speakout SIM, and I'm not sure if the 1GB microSD is included as a poster above mentioned is true of the Speakout 5200...

Anyone know if the 5200 has handsfree capability? I didn't see 'handsfree' on the gmsarena site but have noticed that the site sometimes doesn't include all the features (perhaps because there are Euro models too).
Was considering the 2760. Nice phone but I need tri or quad band. May have to buy a slightly fancier unlocked GMS phone and a 1600 and swap the cards if the 5200 is short on needed features.

The 5200 has a jack to plug in a headset (and comes with a stereo headset to use with both music and while using your phone.
Also, it has built-in Bluetooth.
It MIGHT also come with an adapter to use regular headphones, as this is a music phone.
Here are the details.
