My gmail app was working fine before the "reset". I inputted the correct APN settings. Mobile browsing to websites like yahoo work just fine. The problem is that gmail will not work from the app or from the browser. any suggestions?

not from the browser ? that is strange. but you should be able to use the integrated email client which support Exchange and use m.google.com for gmail. Exchange ActiveSync is HTTP only and works perfectly fine in proxy situation. Except may be push as that requires 'long' HTTP session.

when using the browser, gmail redirects to accounts and then freezes. I can't get the settings right with the stock email client.

for ActiveSync with gmail.

server: m.google.com
username: your google email address
password: your password

same applies for hotmail, switch m.google.com to m.hotmail.com
