I am trying to figure out best plan for my GPS/GPRS tracker for my car. I will be tracking my car movements periodically. For using the GPRS service with SO I need a data plan -- $10/month.

Can anybody think of any other option (with another company) that is better than SO option ?

I'm actually not entirely sure if this will work at all. How does it track? SO's data plan only have port 80 or 443. Do you have a software that connect to port 80 or 443 with the data?

If you haven't tested it, don't assume this data plan will work at all.

You cannot do much better than Speakout for a GPS/GPRS tracker, as long as you are in an area with good Rogers coverage. Bell/Telus towers are probably better for most of canada, but they have something like $10 for 100 megs, which should be adequate, but it is still a cap.

I used proxydroid with google maps, and Speakout UMB works just fine. When I was using my E71, I had no issues with the Speakout proxy with mgmaps, and google maps. I cannot see it being much more different in the iphone world either.

I know proxydroid works with google maps, but he is talking about tracking, which requires sending data OUT to a remote server, those usually are specific software that does this. Not just access to a website.

I am not sure it is necessary ,but it is best that we clarifies what he mean by tracking so we can confirm that his ideal situation will work without issue.

Thank you all. Thx ID01 for pointing this out.

1. To be able to track from my PC I have to use their software (unless I can get hold of another software). The software doc says use any available port in this range 1024~65535. So I guess SO is not an option (yet).

2. I cam across Rogers plan for tablet ($5/month for 10MB). I think this should be adequate for sending location data few times a day for a month. Right ? Is this option viable ? Are there any other hidden fees ?

Roger Plan will work, and yes, sending data for GPS tracking isn't much, but 10 MB is Incredibly low. To the point where I will worry for the over charge. I suggest actually test it to see how much data you will be using (android device will track) and get you a good idea.
