I'm planning on setting up my whole family on the speakout plan - but I don't really like the choice of phones on the speakout plan - can I just buy a GSM cell phone separately? I don't really understand how it all works cause every phone I've seen for sale seems to be linked to a service provider - does this matter?
Thanks!
Unfortunately, in Canada the phones are all tied to providers. You'll have to look for non-retail unlocked GSM phones (or ones that were on the Rogers network), which you can probably find aplenty on eBay, Craigslist, buysell.com, Facebook, and many other secondary sources.
You'll still have to buy the cheapest 7-Eleven phone in order to get the SIM card (or find someone who will just sell you their SIM card), and then swap it into the other phone.
Hmm, that could be problematic. According to this site (username "bugme" password "1234") it cannot be unlocked unless a 7-Eleven CSR can give the code to you...
Actually, it works the opposite way. If a phone is locked, you cannot transfer a SIM card TO it. If a phone is locked, but you are transferring a SIM card FROM it to an unlocked phone, then that works.
From locked to unlocked: Yes
From unlocked to unlocked: Yes
From unlocked to locked: No
From locked to locked: No

I've almost got all the info now! Thanks.
If an unlocked Tri-Band phone is used, and it has bands 900/1800/1900 will the phone work all the time on the SpeakOut /Rogers network?
or will it be compromised if it does not have the 850 band?
Will it work fine, or will it not have as good coverage (cause it is missing one of the 2 bands that SpeakOut uses?)
(See I want to consider a Sony Ericson W800i)
