I need to get a cell phone. Unfortunately, I don't like the selection on 7-Eleven so I have some ideas.

But, I was hoping someone can help me with some advice/recommendations.

7-Eleven Speakout has a promo of $20 off the phone if you get $50+ of air time.

I used to be interested in the C3 but for $120+, I think it's too expensive. I also read if you get it at Rogers, you can unlock it and use it with Speakout but the Speakout C3 you can't unlock?!?!?

So, my idea is to get the 1661 for $19+ plus the $50 air time. Then, if I want to switch phones, I can find a Rogers PAYG phone or any GSM phone (provided it's already unlocked or one that can unlock) and use it with Speakout?

Is there some good recent GSM phones that are under $200 that would work? I guess I'm looking mostly at Rogers phones since they are probably the easiest to unlock? Or?

I read some bad stories about the 1661 phone and its specs/features look awful but I need to get something soon. I'm having problems with my VOIP phone (connection) so I need a cell phone pretty much all the time. My cable internet goes down a lot, too, so even if the VOIP device is working properly, the phone goes down when the internet does, obviously.

I was using Virgin Mobile but we all know how bad it is (prices/expiration policy etc. etc.) and the phone is busted anyway (cracked screen).

So, if anyone can recommend a phone or phones to choose from and/or has a good idea for me. I was waiting to get a decent phone and then use a 7-Eleven SIM card but I need to pick something VERY soon. I don't want to put another cent into the VM which costs $17 each time. A total waste.

Help?!? :-/

You can now get a SIM card from Speakout now for $10. You would also need at least a $25 voucher and a Rogers or unlocked GSM phone.

The best place to find a cheap phone is to check out your local kijiji and look for a phone there. There are a lot of people there that want to sell their old phones, usually under $50.

Rogers phones are easiest because you do not need to unlock them or configure them to get them to work with Speakout SIM cards. Unlocked GSM phones usually work work well also and usually do not need to be configured if you are only using them for voice and text. If you do see a phone that has your interest, let me know, I can tell you why it is no good!

I do not like the Nokia 1661. It is a good enough phone to use in an emergency, but it is not a good phone to use day to day.

Having a difficult time finding some phones... unless I pay more than $150.

Not many phones on kijiji unless you want an expensive Blackberry or iPhone.

So far, I found:
futureshop sells:

Nokia 2720 - $70
Nokia C3 - $90

Unlocked online:

Samsung T349 - $50

Kijiji:
Samsung SGH-j706

There's a few online sites selling unlocked phones.... what about that? I can't find two of the three I came across when I WASN'T looking for a phone... I was just looking at what some smartphones cost. lol!

But, maybe an online site selling unlocked phones would provide a half decent phone I could use with SO with additional SIM card? Getting really discouraged, though. Few choices and few buyers. I guess everyone wants to spend over $300 on a phone.

I know it would be crazy if I got this but I am just curious…. would this work with SO & SIM card?:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/P.....6875502092

Edit:
Reviews show poor battery life and I have no idea who T-Mobile is or what network they use. I need an unlocked phone to be compatible with the Rogers network, right? It matters which provider the phone was used with?

Maybe newegg has some other half decent phones? I mean, if I can't find one used.

Many users on this forum are using the Nokia C3, purchased from Rogers. (This is what I did.) This phone does not need to be unlocked in order to use a Speakout SIM card, since Speakout uses the Rogers network. Just install the activated Speakout SIM and away you go. $89 is the standard price of the Rogers version when bought from Best Buy, Future Shop, London Drugs, etc., but they have previously been on sale for as low as $69.The C3 has a nice QWERTY keyboard for texting, and pretty good battery life. The big plus for me was wi-fi capability. Although this is not a full-fledged "smart phone", it does have software for web browsing, e-mail reading, and other internet functions. Easy to use at free wi-fi locations such as McDonalds and Starbucks.

So, the C3 is a good phone. I thought it was but then read some negative stuff here about it.

I found a used C3 for $63 (not sure why they're asking for that) and like you say, I could get one for $90 + taxes at FS.

I don't think I've ever seen it for $69 but read about it someplace.

I also found a Blackberry 8110 (Pearl?) for $50. But, I'm a bit wary of going with a RIM product these days.

Maybe I'll have to find some more money and get a C3 if these phones are still ok. I just thought $90 was a lot for it.

P.S. Btw, thanks for the recommendations and suggestions.

I'm too poor, I guess, and I'm behind the times. I'd like a smartphone but I'll probably have to get a simple cell phone.

I was hoping for a 3G phone but I'm not sure what choices I'll have for $50 - $100.

I found a used C3 for $60 plus shipping. How much is shipping when you sell a phone?

This is on RFD, though, not kijiji so I can't view the phone and it's too far to go look. The site has ratings, though, but it's still a used phone that I can't really view. Not a bad price but not great either.

Any thoughts?
