I did a search but couldn't find this topic – but has anyone been able to get data to work on a Samsung Galaxy S?
I have the same model:
Samsung Galaxy S Captivate i896, locked to Rogers
Android Smartphone using BuildName Froyo.XUJL1 (.2.2?)
Like the thread: "Android phone and SO" says
Use settings:
Name: Speak Out
APN: goam.com
Proxy: 10.128.1.69
Port: 80
Username: wapuser1
Password: wap
MMSC: http:/mms.gprs.rogers.com
MMS proxy: 10.128.1.69
MMS port: 80
MCC: 302
MNC: 720
Authentication type: None
APN type: Internet
(Note: other thread said: APN Type: Default, but I could only chose Internet + MMS, Internet, or MMS)
Also it had a line for Server, but gave no input for that, so mine still says… Server: Not Set.
Interestingly, when I signed onto my account this past weekend, just after midnight, to activate the Data plan, I waited, the few minutes they suggest, then starting trying to use Internet, and nothing was working.
I also wasn't sure what to look for on the top line of my phone!
SO.. I kept trying, and changing settings, and finally went to bed.
In the morning same thing… nothing "new" showing up on the topline, and still no internet, so I called customer service.
They said they would activate it again, and when I mentioned I had a smartphone, they said that they dont guarantee support, and if it still didn't work, I had until monday to cancel the data service and get my money back.
BUT within minutes, the top status line of my phone, started showing a little icon, with up and down arows and sometimes 3G and sometimes H just above.
I am able to surf using my default Browser, or Opera or Skyfire (still deciding which I like best)
NOW.. I am unable to get "Talk" (Google Talk) to work.. it just says "Signing IN", and then "Could not connect to server. Will retry shortly"
SO looking through threads here, I read suggestions of using Mundu, or eBuddy
I have tried both.
Mundu, when trying to sign into my Google Talk account says:
"Connecting…" then "Server not reachable"
eBuddy says: "Connecting" .. then "Failed to connect to eBuddy Service… "
NOTE: both connect immediately if I have my WiFi turned on!, so I just cant connect through the Data connection.
What I would like is to be able to use IM through the data connection.
I'll keep trying and report here.
Some threads (i.e.: "Samsung Galaxy Vibrant on 7/11 speakout" ) say you need a "rooted" phone, and will need to changer IP tables.......but I haven't taken that route yet.
I'll gladly take suggestions on what else to try.
I was wondering if you could set some "rogers" parameters, to get it to work!

Your application should support the mode to work through proxy (Proxy: 10.128.1.69 Port: 80). also you can try this auto proxy (some of application does not work with it either, but most do):

Thank you so much for the advice. I did install the App AutoProxy. It wanted "su" access so I rooted my phone. That was quite painless and easy.
Now, and I think it is due to AutoProxy, I can use "eBuddy" for IM over the dataplan, and i have found I can use Yahoo Messenger as well.
i cannot use: Talk (the googletalk app.. it just doesnt connect), or Mundo (same.. wont connect).
I have not yet tried any email apps over data. I'll try that soon.
Also, I have noticed, every now and then, that my phone will power on with NO speakout connection (i.e. no phone servie!!) . It is probably some bad APP interaction. I have found that the solution for that is to power off. Remvoe and reinsert the battery and "reseat" the sim. Then 9 out of 10 times, it will turn on WITH speakout connection.
..Thanks for the help... Andrew

autoproxy only proxy the apps but it cannot help if you app use port other than 80/443, i.e. HTTP protocol. gtalk is xmpp so it would not work. anything like imap/pop is not going to work either.
Thanks for the info. Its not always easy to know what an app i using, but i'll keep trying to see what boundaries i can push and get other forms of commuication to work in the data plan.
Interestingly, like someone who has a galaxy S i9000 and who posted in here, I was unable to get my data plan to work tonight. I turned off my WiFi, and the data plan didn't some up, and no matter what i tried, no luck getting it going.
SO like I described about re phone service not working (in this case the phone service WAS working) I turned it iff, pulled out the battery, reseated the sim, and turned in on, and low and behold, the data icon came on!...go figure!... Andrew

WELL, i just had the "data plan" not working problem again.
I was in a hospital, using the dataplan in one area, and then got moved to the emergency dept.! and although I had the data plan symbol on the top line of my Galaxy S, I could not use the browser, or get eBuddy to connect. All things that HAD worked before, were not working.
I kept getting a message: "You don't have permission to access http://www.....com on this server"
I turned the phone off and back, on, and got the data symol on the top line and nothing. I was beginning to think the dept had a jammer working or something!
I turned AutoProxy off and tried the browser, nothing, I turned autoproxy back on, and tried the browser.. nothing.. all the while it showed that i had a data connection!
THEN all of a sudden, it started working! It had been unfunctional for at least 45 minutes!! NO IDEA what caused it, or what fixed it. (I had figured the pwer off and on would do the trick, but not this time!)
..Chock this up as an odd glitch.. and after it came back, it was on solid for 2 hours or so, so who knows!..

Well, I have done some tests, adn here are some of the apps, that I find will work with the dataplan, and with the AutoProxy app running!
eBuddy (for IM)
Yahoo Messenger (yes, it works, but GTalk will not!)
tunein (internet radio app.. works great!.. so now I can get "24/7 Comedy Radio", anywhere!)
ING Direct (internet banking.. I guess just a browser application!)
AT&T Navigator (I'm pretty sure this was working with maps etc.. but will retest to be sure)
GasBuddy (gas prices, but I guess just a browser application)
GMail
Daily Briefing
kobo (online books)
SO.. the dataplan is getting more useful....

most app should work with autoproxy as the trend is apps use http/https to connect to server. The noticeable exceptions are:
IM - it is usually two way communication on specific ports
VOIP - again must use non-http
pop/imap mail - again old standard
For IM, use aggregator like ebuddy, for email gmail/hotmail now has activesync so is http based. yahoo mail has apps and I believe is using http. Corporate email depends, if they enable activesync, it would work. The rest just use gmail to retrieve them.
So I would say 80% of the app should work.

Hi Andrew. I just purchased an unlocked Motorola Atrix to use with SO. I have the data working to the point where I can use the browser but I can't get the apps you mentioned to work. I have added the Speak Out APN using all the settings mentioned here. I was just wondering what settings you've used for the Autoproxy app?
Thanks
