I'm looking for some guidance. I'm thinking about purchasing this phone and I'm wondering what type of problems I might encounter using it on SO?
Here are some basic facts about the phone.
2G Network: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network: HSDPA 900 / 2100
OS: Android OS, v2.2 Froyo, upgradable to v2.3
I believe it will work on the 2G network, but I'm not sure if the apps will work?
Also it's currently being sold at Virgin.

That particular version of the HTC S710e would not be sold by Virgin Canada, because Virgin Canada requires a HSDPA phone that runs on the 850 /1900 mhz frequency band. I would not be surprised there are 2 versions of the HTC S710e. The model you are interested in looks to be the European version, which is much more limited in it's use in North America. The only network this phone can use is 2G GSM. In Canada, that leaves you with the Rogers Network, of which Speakout uses.

The other issue is that because the Speakout network runs through a proxy, most Android apps will not work, unless the app has the ability to configure proxy settings. The browser and browser based apps should work fine.

There is apparently a hack which allows apps to run through a proxy, but it requires the phone to be rooted. I have little experience with this, so you are kind of on your own in that regard.

Tongue and cheek here, but get a Nokia E Series phone instead! The ancient Symbian OS and apps thrive within a proxy! I hear since a lot of apps on an iPhone are web based, so the iPhone reportedly also works well with Speakout.

I am not against Android phones, but unless you got it for a good price, I would pass on that particular HTC S710e. It is probably too expensive to hack, which you would likely need to do to get Speakout working to it's fullest potential. It's limited Canadian network compatibility is also a huge minus.

Thanks Bridonca, your info is a big help. With the HTC a big feature I was looking for was a phone that can become a Hotspot. With the Nokia E Series phones do you know if any of those models can become a hotspot? I understand the iphone can do it, I'm not sure of any other phones though.
