Hi there, sorry if this has been covered to death, but I can't find this exact info anywhere... I got an I phone 4 GSM at a garage sale for 5 bucks!! It has a very cracked screen, but she promised that it works. Get it home and charge it up and sure enough it seems to work quite well. My 7-11 SIM doesn't fit of course, but I used my home network and a whole bunch of things were working without a SIM installed. She said it was Rogers, but it was "unlocked anyway, so would work on whatever." The first thing that happen was that it asked to be updated, so I thought, what the heck and updated it. I now know this may have been a mistake?? It also still had a whole bunch of her private info on it. Tons of messages and Facebook autologin and the like, so I thought (mistake number 2. I'm very dumb!) I should just reset it all and start from scratch. But of course, resetting it has made it unusable. It won't work without a SIM. I don't want to cut my 7-11 SIM in case it won't work... So does anyone know if

1. Has my updating ruined the unlocked nature of the phone somehow?
2. Will my 7-11 SIM still just work if I cut it correctly?
3. Is there a way to make the thing work again without a SIM because it was nice just as a wireless device for a while there...
4. Am I the dumbest person on the planet?
5. Please don't answer #4 because I actually already know the answer...
Thanks!

if it is rogers locked, you are fine. just activate it again with a cut down SO sim.

also, get a cutter so you can reuse the original big SIM. I do it so my SIM is usuable in both my Galaxy Gio and iphone 4/4s.

you must put in a rogers SIM(or SO) to activate the iphone, otherwise it won't work. you can also bring it into apple store to have them activate it for you, if they believe that it is your phone.

after activation, you don't need a SIM inside.

Are you the dumbest person on the planet? No, the previous owner was for selling it to you for $5.

Haha, thanks for the vote of confidence! It's very smashed up and she already bought a replacement phone, but yeah, 5 bucks was oddly cheap! I really should have turned her messages into a book or something, but I was trying to do the honest thing but honesty ruined everything...

Thanks for the reply! I'm curious to hear about answer #3 if you have time... It just won't do anything and says it needs a SIM...

Yeah, thanks, i'll just have to do that. I went to the rogers store today and they were too paranoid to put one of their sims in it... Sims don't ever get locked to certain phones do they? The employees were nice, but I was hoping they'd have a little more knowledge...

Google can be your friend for this. (I wont say more than "pre-fix with H", in case it's against forum rules!)

Walk into an apple store and told them you bought a second hand phone locked to rogers and ask them to give you a rogers micro SIM, I tried twice and each time they are happy to do that, free.
