iMessage uses a short code SMS to activate your phone number. Since SpeakOut does not support short codes, you are out of luck if you do not have a jailbroken iPhone.
If it is jailbroken, you can follow these instructions

Are you sure iMessage and Facetime are not just linked to your apple ID? Does it actually show that it's linked to your cell number? Both will still work and be active if linked to your apple ID.
Not even the workaround works anymore, atleast I couldn't get it to work when my iPhone was jailbroken on 6.1.x.
Atleast with the new data, iMessage works (linked to your apple ID) and you're able to send and receive messages on 3G. Guess that's one good thing with the new data. LOL.
It's a bit confusing for the other iPhone party as if they send you a text to your number, it will go through sms since iMessage is not linked to your number. Your reply will go via iMessage since the other party assuming not on SO has their number linked to it. This exchange looks fine on your end but will look like two duplicate contacts on theirs. One where they sent the sms and the 2nd with the iMessage conversation.
