There seemed to be some discrepancy as to whether maps worked on UMB for ios 6 in previous threads. I am thinking of upgrading. Does it work over UMB or not?

It depends.

If you are looking at the basic map, then yes, the data loads and you can see the map. Once you go into navigation, if you had downloaded the data already and it exists in your cache, then you will see the map. But it does not seem to load new data in this mode. Getting out of navigation and zooming in and then going back to navigation seems to give you what you want.

So all in all, it kind of sometimes works.
