Okay, so I have an Iphone 3g that was working great on the Petro Canada plan with unlimted internet, blah blah blah. Well, I went to download an app. from the app. store and it told me the device did not support the download and to hook into itunes and download the latest iphone software update. At the end of it running its course, a message appeared in itunes saying that this sim card was not compatible with what i was trying to do and to insert a sim card that would work. That's where shit hit the fan. I did the update- and once it ran its course for about 10 or 15 minutes, it had restored all old settings to the phone (which is NOT what I wanted to do) and now the phone will not work at all. I can only get the "emergency call" screen to appear. I am not even able to get to the main screen. No phone, no text, no net, no nothing.
Has anyone else run into this issue and if you have any advice on how I can get my phone back up and running it would be GREATLY appreciated!

Okay, so what is on the phone right now is pretty basic. It' got the picture of the cord pointing upwards towards the itunes logo and on top of that it has the lock - and IT IS IN LOCKED POSITION. Does this mean that I have removed the unlocking software that was already installed on the phone. Do I have to figure out a way to do the unlock again? I'm desperate. please help. thank you.

When I plug the phone into my computer and itunes pops up, the message that i am receiving is as follows: THE SIM CARD IN THIS DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED. Yes, its in big bold letts in the screen, too. Then it says "Only compatible sim cards from supported carrier may be used to activate iphone. Please insert the sim card that came with your iphone or visit a supported carriers store to obtain a new replacement SIM card.
The sim card that is in it is the one i got out of the Nokia when I purchased it at Petro......

Because I do not own an apple product, I will not be very useful you to you, but I do like asking questions!
I assume the Petro Canada SIM still works on your nokia right? If you are really lucky, the SIM is not connecting to your iphone properly. and if you adjust the SIM enough, the 3GS will recognize the SIM.
Who was the original carrier of the phone? I have a feeling apple was nice enough to carrier lock the phone after the update.

What has happened is that by updating, Apple has replaced the custom firmware that you at some point created, with stock firmware. As your SIM does not appear to be supported, I can safely assume that your iPhone is NOT a Rogers phone, but has been Jailbroken & Unlocked to run on Speakout. So, did you jealbreak the phone or did someone else do it for you?
Nonetheless, you need to fix the problem. Unfortunately, that is probably not possible at this time. There is a tethered jailbreak available for your phone (tethered means that every time you power off your phone or the battery goes dead, you will have to attach it to your computer and re apply the jailbreak), but I dont believe there is a carrier lock available.
(I say "don't believe" because the 4.2.1 update you did upgraded the bootrom on your phone making it unlockable. If you or someonelse backed up uour "SSH blobs" on Cydia, you may be able to restore the old bootrom and unlock. Judging by your lack of knowledge or expertise about your phone, I'm assuming you haven't done this.)
So, bottom line, you've probably "bricked" your phone, at least yntil a new jailbreak is released. Look at this page, it may give you more info about restoring your bootrom...

Okay, a little more info for you. This stuff literally changes daily, so I have to really do some research with every question I get, and what I write today may be outdated in a day or two. But, here goes...
The current jailbreak (Redsn0w) is in fact tethered. The good news is that unlike previous tethered jailbreaks, you can reboot your device. Only the jailbroken features of your phone won't work until you plug in and re-apply the jailbreak. Not sure if that includes the carrier unlock however.
More importantly, a carrier unlock for your phone will be released on Sunday. So you'll be without your phone features until then, but consider yourself lucky. Other updates have forced upgraders to wait months for a fix.
Right now you should apply the jailbreak
Here is a video showing how to jailbreak your phone...

Once Jailbroken, you should be able to connect to itunes and "Restore from backup". This will get all your contacts, apps, music, etc. back on your phone.
Then you can install the Speakout profile using the iPhone Admin Utility.
After that, wait until Sunday.
