Just tested data after using unlockit.co.nz and that is working fine as well with the exception of iOS6 maps (as reported and you don't want to use them right now anyway I suppose ...).
I suppose using a cutter that is already available on eBay etc with make it more precise, but with scissors and nail file you can definitely manage to make it fit!
As usual the "Kids don't do this!" warning as you playing around with a SIM tray for a $700+ phone

Yep, I used a nail file but there are numerous reports coming up that it is not necessary at all to reduce the hight as those 0.0whatever millimeters don't make a difference.
Little correction btw. iOS6 maps do work, it just takes some time before they are fully loaded. However, SIri did not work today on SO when I tested it.

Just did a Speedtest twice in Downtown Toronto at 7am on a Saturday:
Ping 78/93ms, Download 8.84/11.09Mbps Upload 0.00.
Strangely upload didn't work and I guess this is due to the proxy limitations. Of course upload works while using emails, internet, maps etc etc but did not using the Speedtest app.
For the same reason WhatsApp isn't working I suppose.
But since we all have free wifi hotspots around the corner, I don't really care. Right now I pay about $15/month for unlimited internet and the calls / texts I make - unbeatable!

That's amazing. Thank you so much for trying this.
The speeds seem better than what I'm getting with my iPhone 4. Do you know if your iPhone 5 is connected via LTE? Does it show the LTE symbol in the status bar, or the 3G symbol?
I'm surprised that you thought the maps app was broken, because it was so slow. That probably means it must have been VERY slow - although you're experiencing faster wireless speeds. Is it still so slow? In your opinion, do you think it's too slow to use it properly?

Haha, no, no LTE. I think SpeakOut limits this somehow for a good reason
I just did another speed test (still Downtown Toronto) and came up with 125ms and a download of 6.14Mbps (upload not possible to test), so still very decent.
I can't say more about the maps issue, before I have tested it further. However, checking the Cellular Usage stats showed my that loading the rendered 3D satellite maps just for the corner where I live, used up 4.5MB of data. When I tested it yesterday, I also switched to 3D satellite maps and that was perhaps not the brightest idea. The standard maps however load quickly, so I would call this usable (in terms of speed) but I would give iOS6 maps about 3-6 months before I would use them to navigate

Please send more info or photos of the sim cutting process. Your success is encouraging.
I just received my factory unlocked black 16G iPhone 5 I preordered on Sept 14. It arrived on Sept 21 as promised.
I cut the SpeakOut SIM into nano-SIM size by following http://www.redmondpie.com/how-.....-iphone-5/.
I inserted the nano-SIM into the iPhone 5 and activated it.
I then connected it to Wifi and went to http://unlockit.co.nz using the iPhone 5 Safari browser, and created the APN for Canada/Speakout.
I can now use SpeakOut data plan on my iPhone 5.
Most apps that I need work. The ones that don't are Apps Store download, Skype, Facetime, Whatsapps and Siri.

Nice one, this is what I did! Shame not more people know about it / use SO and give the big three a kick in the teeth until they offer reasonable plans!

I did the same, and it's working great.
I just used a scissors and the iPhone 5 SIM tray. Cut a bit, compare, repeat.
The thickness didn't seem to matter in my case. No need to sand it down. It fit in just fine with the normal SIM thickness.
The only issue is that my SIM had 10 contacts (newer ones only have 6), so I had to cut into the unused contacts. No big deal, as the actual chip is in the middle of the contacts, so I didn't cut into it.
