I use iphone and android. And I can say that if I am in the 'consumer' mode, I find it to be very nice. Switch back to my productivity role, apple stuff sucks.
Almost 10 years ago Apple made a shift in direction from concentrating on the professional creative market to the home consumer market. If you want a productivity tool, get a blackberry. Or, jailbreak your phone and use productivity apps that available from other parties.
As for what Apple does in the phone market, remember that when the original iphone came out there were no other phones like it. Whether you like it or not, every Android phone is just a copy of an iPhone.

The iphone had a premium price because it was better. This is the first time it is no longer better.
As for a copying, it is not like Apple invented anything. It took what was out there, and improved the interface. It did not take much effort for competitors to do the same, so it is not exactly a mean engineering feat.

This is just my own experience, not intended to start a debate. I used iPhone 3G/GS for many years, then moved to Android (Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus), skipping the whole iPhone 4 era. Now I am on iPhone 5. I just wanted to say that it feels so good.
Android is very functional but seems clunky in execution. I find that my 4-year old iPhone 3G feels smoother than even the latest JB Android. Apple must have some secret sauce.
Yes, iPhones may be more expensive upfront, but I am not sure they are more costly economically speaking given their robust resale value.

Yeh, like there were so many touch screen smartphones out there before the iPhone. Now there are dozens, all with the same basic look as the iPhone. Coincidence? I think not!

I own a UTStarcom PPC6700, which is 2005 technology. And that was just one touch screen phone of that era, among many. When did the first iPhone come out, 2007? Try to get a handle on your facts next time.
I was also arguing that Apple phones were superior, up to now. I suspect the resale market for all iPhones will crater because of that fact. Especially the iPhone 5 because of it's non standard port and weird SIM card bracket.

who has the FIRST touch based device is a non-issue.
Apple tried this before in the GUI war with Microsoft and lost(which was not a jury trial).
And there is also no coincidence that they won in the jury trial in califonia yet mostly lost in other countries when ruled by judges, it is much easier to influence the general public(read a form of marketing and brand building, we see this in politics too)
As for smoothness in iphone, it is not secret sauce but the plain old 'doing fewer things in the background' and also the plain old technical aspect that iOS UI is running in native code whereas android UI is a java VM on top of linux.

To activate an unlocked iPhone without speakout, do I just go down to 7-11 buy a sim card, cut it to size, stick it in and it works? Besides using safari and going to that website, is there anything else I need it to do? I'm new to all this and would really like help before I go waste 10 bucks on a sim card.
Once I get the sim card and activate the phone, then do I add the $25 credit to the account?

You get the sim card, cut it down and put it in the phone. Then you have to call speakout from another line and activate the SIM and select a phone number (you can do this online as well, but I like to do it over the phone) You can then add your $25 voucher. If you want data, you can activate that after the $25 has been added..

If you want to use data you also need to go to unlockit.co.nz (nothing to do with unlocking btw) to change your APN settings to SpeakOut.
Most well known carrier settings are applied automatically (ie Bell, Rogers, Telus etc), but SpeakOut doesn't, so you need to set them manually (ie unlockit.co.nz or via Apple Software Tool).

Hey
I really want an iPhone (probably 4S so i can still be on iOS 5 and its cheaper... by alot ), and thinking of SpeakOut or Petro and go with the $20 plan, and maybe add UMB sometime later... so im just wondering about it, does it actually give you 3G or EDGE? because of what i know, its just EDGE, but in the link someone put, the iphone 5 was running on 3G, so how is that?
Also, push notifications dont work, do they?
What about google maps, mail app (Yahoo in particular), YouTube (app and website)? And do full websites (desktop websites, not mobile formatted) work? or is it just the mobile websites that do?
and finally, what about 3rd party apps like Draw Something, Dictionary.com, radio apps (virgin radio), dropbox, etc...?
Sorry about the large number of questions but thanks!!
oh and one last thing, how come PCM and SpeakOut work on Rogers phones, but not Fido, since fido uses rogers network too?
Thanks a lot!

Well, I guess 3G/EDGE depends on your area. I am in Downtown Toronto and have nothing but 3G. I have been to NL however and in some parts around St John's only had EDGE. So whenever there is no 3G, you will drop down to EDGE and if this is not available you will drop down to GPRS. Even GPRS is sufficient to check emails and retrieve simple information via web but not more. I would check your Rogers coverage and you should know what to expect.
Apps as far as I was/am concerned (iPhone 4 iOS 5 and now iPhone 5 iOS 6) run fine except for apps download and WhatsApp. All maps, email and Dropbox was and is working fine. I believe that iMessage and Facetime has issues but someone posted a workaround for this on this forum. All third party apps I use (mostly travel related stuff like guides, hotel apps, Tripadvisor etc) work without problems as they all use the HTTP port 80 that is open on SpeakOut.
No idea regarding your last question btw.
One other limitation btw: SpeakOut works only in Rogers-covered areas in Canada. So I for example had no reception in the rural parts of East Newfoundland. I also need a US SIM when travelling to the States but given that I save at least $250 per year I would otherwise pay for a bloody contract, I have no problems with that!

So I understad that if you're in an LTE covered area, you should be getting LTE on an iPhone 5, right?
And also, as for imessage and facetime, were you able to activate them usin ur phone number without having to jailbreak and modify files? Or did it activate when the short message window was open a while ago?
And finally, do push notifications work at all? Because not having push notifications unless at home is a waste of a ..smartphone (at least for me)
thanks!!

It's only a matter of time before you guys screw UMB up. There is no SpeakOut "data plan". It is Unlimited Mobile Browsing. If you can afford $700 for a bloody iPhone then you can afford to go elsewhere and get a real data plan and not screw up SpeakOut's excellent $10 UMB plan. Here's hoping Rogers comes up with a way to stiff you guys without knocking the rest of us, who comply with the plan rules, out of business.

well not for me
In fact, after using push(at home/work via wifi) for a while now, I would prefer no push as it becomes extremely annoying. I would rather it to be just regular check every 30 minutes or so.
And no, push is extremely iffy and would not work even for activesync due to the short live of session on the proxy server.

First of all, i said iphone 4s instead of 5 (which is in fact 700), because its cheaper and thus CANT afford a $700 phone. I am also looking to buy a USED or at least new but LOCKED to rogers, which is cheaper. by a lot.
Second of all, how exactly are we screwing UMB up? i never mentioned "Data Plan".
Going back to money terms and being able to afford a phone, I am looking to get the UMB because i CANNOT afford a data plan whatsoever.

Oh well, notifications matter for me haha
but i have a question, if lets say u turn off push (is it the push in the mail settings?) and set it to manual for 30 mins for example, will the push notifications come every 30 mins? or is this push setting only for mail?
Thanks!

No, if you turn off push, push notifications will not work every 30 minutes. However if you set it to manual for 30 minutes, notifications if any will come every 30 minutes.
Hopefully that clears it all up.
