I'm heading to Toronto on Thursday (from New York), and from what I've read, Speak Out seems to be the best option for what I need - very few minutes, very few texts, and a little data.

I'm using a Verizon iPhone 5 (and have already cut a few SIMs, so that doesn't bother me), but I want to make sure what I'm expecting will work:

For calls, I should be able to PAYG for $.25 (Ontario) or $.45 (Canada and US)
Send texts for $.10 (US/Canada)
I'm probably going to use the $10 browsing option, assuming it is still offered.

The question I have is about iMessage. From what I've read, it sounds like it doesn't work when sent to a phone number (being sent as a short-code message), but does it work being sent to an e-mail address?

In my experience, iMessage only works over wifi. Over the Speakout network, I can't send iMessages and the imessages that are sent to me by others are sometimes received as text messages and sometimes only received after I have reestablished a wifi connection.

I am assuming that your phone is unlocked.

Make sure that you read thru the forum for how to set up your apn. There seem to be some tricks involved in getting an iphone to work on the umb ("data").

iMessage (whether using phone number or email address) will NOT work on 3G because Speakout's browsing plan only allows TCP port 80 and 443, and the rest of the ports are blocked. iMessage also needs TCP port 5223 to work.

When using wifi, iMessage will work only with the email address. Like you said, the short code messages are needed and is used for activation of iMessage phone number, which SO does not support.

i can register iMessage/iCloud/facetime without problem. But that may be a hit and miss as some other said they can't.

You might want to read through this website, that is what I used to set up my iPhone 4S. But if I remember right there is a file to download and use to set up the iPhone, I had to get an updated file instead of the file in the website article. Once you have the file and execute it, it will set up the iPhone for UMB. There was no need to do it manually, just enter the asked for info and follow it to the finish!

BTW, this is the correct file to set up an iPhone for Speakout UMB. http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1466
