Hi, I'm looking to change over to Speakout soon.
I'm thinking about rooting my phone (lg optimus black) and installing the proxy app.
Is adding $10 for UMB and converting into "data" plan worth it?
I just want to save huge phone bill by converting UMB to data plan and use textplus for texts and calls.

Thanks in advance.

It depends on your expectations. If you want to mostly browse, and use web based applications, Speakout is a great, low cost solution. If you want to do everything the internet has to offer, things that are hard in the bandwidth, or streaming, or VOIP you will be disappointed with Speakout browsing.

The proxy app runs a few things like google maps, but don't expect miracles. I would root the phone for other reasons, like getting rid of crapware on you phone.

Thank you for the reply. Does textplus work if I root my phone and set up data using proxy app? Textplus is the only app I care if it works or not.. Thanks again!

I don't know what Bridonca's experience is with running the Proxy as it does pretty much everything that full "data" provides except VOIP services like DellVoice as it needs two ports to work.

I use TextMe instead of TextPlus for texting so I do not see why it won't work for texting. Calling likely will not work. Only Skype seems to work for calling.

VOIP is one(but that is a none issue), the other one is IM. No proper IM works without aggregator(i.e. your password leaks to the middleman like IM+).

I found what works well is Whatsapp. It is like BBM but will work with UMB. It does not push the messages but intermittently refresh from the server. You may not get instantaneous response unless you are physically open the app keeping it open.

With Whatsapp, you will have to get all your contact to use it. But once you switch over, you definitely like it.
