Hi,

I was recently in Buffalo and noticed that one can buy a LG 500g qwerty phone for $30 from Tracphone (a PAYG service in the US) The specs on the phone are GSM 900/1800/1900.

Assuming that I could get this phone unlocked for $5-$10, does anyone know if I could put a Speakout SIM in it and have it work for talk/text, at least in theory?

TIA.

I'm not sure they can be unlocked. Tracfone uses propriety software, and I haven't heard of someone unlocking one. Not saying it can't be done though. I used to have a Tracfone CDMA phone years ago, and I know that phone was not able to be unlocked. It could be the same with Tracfone GSM phones.

I have a bag full of various tracfones. I have sims from Florida to Mass to WNY to Watertown area. I have tried various phones and asked by the best online services to have them unlocked.... no can do. Maybe someone will break a codes sometime, but if you do find out if there is a way, please call 905-228-2161 or 1-877-469-3017 toll-free because i may have some goodies in that bag:-)

Thank you for the responses.

In Googling TracPhone it appears that their business model is to sell phones as a loss leader to gain sales of minutes and as such have made their phones very difficult to unlock. Looks like this is not a worthwhile path to pursue.
