If you just bought a Speakout sim card and can't get the data to work (while calls and SMS work), your phone might be using the wrong APN.
The APN for phones connected over LTE is: ltemobile.apn
None of the other APNs work, and it's not usually possible to see or set it in the phone's settings, since the SIM seems to tell the phone to hide that information. The APN you're seeing in your settings is probably for "Personal Hotspot". That APN won't be used when the data connection is made.
On iPhone, you can get a diagnostic message by opening Safari and trying to load a website. If you get the error "You are not subscribed to a cellular data service", it's likely that your APN is wrong.
To get around the restriction on changing the APN, you can try to insert some other SIM card that doesn't hide the APN in the settings, set it, then swap cards again.
If that doesn't work, on iPhone you can set the APN using a configuration profile, using Apple Configurator. The tool that generates these at unlockit.co.nz has not been updated with the new APN, and if you've used it previously, you should uninstall the profile.
- Install Apple Configurator on a Mac from the App Store
- Connect your phone via USB
- File > New Profile
- In the left panel, select Cellular
- Hit the Configure button
- Set the default APN name to "ltemobile.apn"
- Save the profile to a file
- In the main configurator window, select your device
- In the top bar, press the Add button
- Select the file you just save
- Add it
Now you can activate the profile on your phone by going in the settings, then general > Profiles > select your profile and install it.
This is what fixed it for me, and hopefully it works for you!
