My Local store is dumping the Unlocked Nokia 5200 sliders for $40. The sim will not work with SO but if you have a current sim you can slide it in and it's good to go.
They are 2005 technology & it's only works on GSM 850/1800/1900 bands. Even the cheap 1661 has better access with Dual-band EGSM 900/1800, GSM 850/1900 but is locked.

I have a Nokia 5200 that I bought from 7-11 and have been using it with SO since Sept. 2008. I put a Telus SIM card in it recently and it doesn't recognize it. I therefore think that my 5200 is not unlocked. If you're planning to buy one of the Nokia 5200 mentioned above, and you want it to be unlocked, you might want to check first that it is indeed unlocked.

The Nokia 5200 is a tri band GSM phone. it is only 2G which means that if it is locked it will work with whichever of Rogers or Fido it is locked to, and if unlocked it will work with both Rogers and Fido. Since you have been using it on SO, you know that it will work on Rogers.
The portion of the Telus/Bell network that uses SIM card type phones is only 3G. They do not have a 2G/GSM network.

If they started to sell the Nokia C3, I really hope that they will improve the text capability soon. At this time, my daytime ("business") cell is on Speakout, but my "home" phone is still on Virgin for pretty much that reason. I would really, really appreciate to receive emails as SMS (gateway) as almost any other carriers offer. Also, it may sound shallow, but I like to receive Facebook and Twitter SMS alerts from specific persons I subscribe to. The issue is I need to send a shortcode to activate my phone on my account and Speakout doesn't allow them (yet). It is sure that I would like to get faster internet on my smartphone and maybe upgrading to a Iphone/BB (for what it is good for), but the lack of text capability is really what block from porting my 2nd number with them. Also, if you have ideas about bypassing these "bugs", don't hesitate to share your ideas.

Any phone you are considering purchasing that is being sold as unlocked I strongly advise that you swap your Sim & try it out in store, before purchasing to confirm.
7-11 offers a 10 day, no questions asked return policy on new phones in original packaging.
Also it is always a great idea to research the specs beforehand so you know exactly what you are purchasing regarding operating bands & features!

Some people want all the "bells and whistles" in a wireless carrier, and there are options if you need that. SpeakOut was designed as a low cost, no/low frills carrier. I hope they don't change a thing.
They don't need to change much, just fully activate the email gateway. We can already receive emails thru the Rogers gateway, but we can't read them at this time. It won't cost them a dime to make that change, but it will really improve the things for some of us.

Folks,
It is official now... https://www.speakout7eleven.ca/phones/nokia-c3
But honestly, DO NOT EXPECT this "feature phone" is anything like an iPhone! DO NOT EXPECT it is like an entry-level Android powered smartphone or even a Samsung Bada-powered Wave! It may looks like a BlackBerry or its Nokia E series siblings that runs on Symbian... NO! The closest thing on the current market I would compare is INQ - sans 3G!

The C3 is often on sale at FS or Best Buy for $69.99, and I saw it at Walmart the other day for $79.88. So existing SO users are probably better off buying a Rogers-branded handset from a big box retailer.
That said, the C3 *does* make sense right now if you're buying $100 airtime, since you'll get a 50% discount, bringing the price down to $159.50 for the C3 and airtime. That's cheaper than the competition.
