Is it possible to use a new, never activated, Rogers prepaid phone with a SpeakOut SIM?

I'd like to get a Lumia 520 or HTC 8X to use with SpeakOut as the SpeakOut phone offerings are not good value for the money.

Is this likely to work?

Both phones will work fine out of the box. Even the data settings will not need to be configured.

Both the Lumia 520 and the HTC 8X use Micro SIM cards. Make sure you purchase a Speakout Micro SIM card if you intend to use either phone.

My question is why would you want to deal with Speakout if you have Rogers prepaid. $100 gets you local evenings and weekends, and 100 daytime minutes for the year. Just make sure you disable the voice mail. Also for $100, you can get unlimited texting and 100 daytime minutes for emergencies, for the year. If you use Loblaws occasional tax free sale, you saved tax on the Rogers card.

The only advantage of Speakout is the $25 a year card. You certainly do not need a good phone for that.

Thanks for the information.

I'd rather deal with SpeakOut because my use case is primarily offline apps and data over wifi. I'm very unlikely to use more than $25 a year of voice or text as I have a landline that doesn't charge by the minute.

The Rogers 100 minutes for $85 plan seems to be a special promotion with published end date. However, when they're done with the promotion, the next lowest Rogers price is $15.75/month fixed fee and $0.25/minute for all usage. It's an absolute ripoff compared to SpeakOut.
