Super newbie here if anyone can help. I just received a new unlocked iPhone 4 and installed a cut down older SO sim card without any problems. The iPhone picked up the service right away and set up the phone for everythng pertaining to the voice or cell plan. So I call Customer Service and added the data. Waited the 15 mins as suggested, then rebooted the phone. I'm still waiting. Called back CS and they assured me that the data was active on my account but could (or would) not help me with an unlocked phone. All I am able to get is an 'E' in the service bar where it should be showing me what type of data service I have.

I have poured over the phone and every setting I can find. Just don't understand why the phone can't access the data portion of the service.

Can someone help or point me to a page that might have already dealt with this problem already?

Cheers to all, Nathan

You have to create and install a profile for Speakout.

-Obtain the iPhone Configuration Utility from Apple, via their website. It's a free download. A windows and Mac OS/X version exists.
-Start the application.
-Click on "Configuration Profiles" in the left column.
-Click the "New" button in the top left corner.
-Under the "General" section fill in the "Name" and "Identifier" fields with whatever you like, I used:
Name: "Speakout Wireless"
-Identifier: "com.speakout.wireless"
-In the "Advanced" section, enter the following:
APN: "goam.com"
-User Name: "wapuser1"
-Password: "wap"
-Proxy Server: "10.128.1.69"
-Port: "80"
-Then attach your iPhone to the computer, it will show up in the left column under Devices. When you see it, click on it to select it.
-In the right screen, click the "Configuration Profiles" tab. You should see the "Speakout Wireless" configuration you just created.
-Click the "Install" button next to it.

Absolutely awsome, big thank Andreww. I'll give this a go. You laid it out real nice, I'm not suspecting any problems.

If I do I'll post what happened to me.

Cheers, Nathan

Thanks for all the help again Andreww. I was able to get the Utility to install only after trying it on three different PC's. Always errors in "finding the Apple Mobile device", even though it was running on all that I tried.

I followed the info you gave me and it now works, however I find that it is extremely unstable and slow. I did a speed test of just the GPRS wireless data link and found that although the download and Latency times were reasonable, the Upload numbers would not move. There was no upload transmission. Is this right?

Some of the very simple apps work, but others that net GPS or a little more speed I find either won't run or say there is a loss of network. Are there any tweaks that I need to Do?

Anyone?

Cheers, Nathan

Hey Nathan, I'm not exactly sure where you are located but I find that during weekdays in downtown Toronto, my data speed is all but useless. As soon as I get out of the core, the speed picks up again. For me I really have to think hard to remember apps that don't work, besides the obvious Mail app.

What you can try is to create three separate profiles with the iPhone utility. All use the same settings but have different proxy address info. Remember, you can only install one profile at a time, so you'll have to delete the one from your phone before installing a new one. Not sure if it'll make a difference but its worth a try. Use the addresses to create two new profiles. I just name them Speakout1, Speakout2, etc.

172.025.000.107
208.200.067.150

As far as checking network speeds, I could not get Speed Test to work at all. Usually when something doesn't work like tha it is more than likely that it requires a SSL connection. Its not that you don't have upload capabilities, but more likely the app just can't get a reading because the lack of SSL or it just can't navigate the Rogers proxy. I can assure you it works on mine though as I upload images to facebook all the time.

Thanks again Andreww. Your a big help. I'm out in Cambridge, don't know if that is helping me or hurting me. But I'll try the new stuff you suggested and see if it helps.

Cheers, Nathan

I also want to thank andreww for that information. I tried using a browser based apn changer and the data just wouldn't work. Then I used the information posted in this thread, and probably other places on this forum, and now the data works great. By the way, I am using a jailbroken/unlocked iPhone 3G with iOS4 installed.

Is there any way to check for sure? I bought it unlocked. I think it might have been telus because before I put my sim card in, it showed telus in the carrier information.

Edit: Okay, the model number is mb702ll, and apparently was an AT&T model.

As I suspected. Seems to me that only Rogers branded 3G iPhones have meen barred from using Speakout data.

andrew can you explain the 3 different IP address profiles again?

i think i have screwed up my connection when i tried to enter in the other 2 IP addresses.

when i try and click on the "INSTALL" button it does nothing, and my device has no configuration profiles showing up.

does anyone else get a InSTALL button that does nothing?

thanks,
Curtis

Curtis, you can only install one profile at a time on the phone. What I mean is that I have all three profiles set up in the utility. If I experience an issue, then I uninstall the current profile, then install another.

Andrew, I've checked the Apple website and I'm not able to find any reference to the iphone configuration utility (I looked under support and I did a search...nothing). Have they removed it or am I not looking in the right place ?? If you (or anyone else) could PM the link to me, I'd appreciate it.

Hey,

I am also using an iphone 4 with Speakout service. Yesterday I added the 10$ internet browsing feature and was so frustrated that it wouldn't work. I then came across Andrew's instructions and everything went smoothly until the very last step! Once I selected my newly created Speakout configuration for my iphone and the "configuration profiles" tab on the right, there was no "install" button to press. I can't install . Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Anita

Where do you live? If you are in a rural area there is a chance that you may not be receiving a signal? You could also try resetting the phone by holding the home button, then hold the power button until you see the apple logo startup screen. If that fails, make sure 1) phone is locked to Rogers or unlocked. 2) 3G is turned off, 3) Remove the profile and install one of the other two.
