Can an unlocked Wind Mobile Nokia 5230 be used on the Speakout network? I want to switch because of poor coverage issues but would like to know before spending $$ for unlocking.

Also, where can I get it unlocked cheap? Many people report getting incorrect codes from websites after paying $20 or so.

As far as I know, Wind phones are not compatible with SpeakOut.

Unlocked Wind mobile phones will most certainly work with Speakout. Though 3G is incompatible, the 2G GSM part of the phone works fine.

Good to know. Where can I get unlock codes reliably? A reliable site you guys have used successfully before?

You might have better luck asking on a Wind based forum, since it's a Wind phone you want to unlock.

I was looking at the forums that allowed Wind phone to be unlocked, and I could not find many. There is a reason. Wind will give you the unlock code for free! They wont tell you how to unlock the phone though.

Actually you need to wait for 3 months before they give the code.
More research shows this model is not easily hackable and code must come from the manufacturer.

Once you have the code

Press #
Press * three times = p
Press * four times = w
Press * twice = +
Enter the unlock code (15 digit number)
Press * twice = +
Press 1, then # and the display should read “SIM Restriction Off”

Does it mean the Nokia 5230 can't use the $10/- Speakout web browsing ? Can anyone confirm on that because I planning to do that.

I'm using a T-mobile unlocked Nokia 5230 with the $10 browsing, no problem. Just don't abuse it and we'll probably be fine! Getting 3G plus speeds. Guess this doesn't technically answer your question though, since it's a T-M.

I got a feeling it shouldn't have any problem since SO is Rogers and technically I don't see why it can't. I ask because the other user claims it is not compatible which sounds confusing.

You can get 3G from your Nokia 5230? If so, I did not know it was a penta-band phone! It would be nice if someone tried a Bell/Telus SIM card to confirm!

I'm not sure it would be penta band. I'm not knowledgeable enough. Here is a quote from elsewhere. Perhaps just quad, if I understand it…..

"I think the Wind/Mobi/TM Nokia 5230 will also partially work 3G on Rogers/Bell/Telus (850 only, no 1900). Note – this is not the same version of the Nokia 5230 as the one Newegg has for sale in Hot Deals. The one in Newegg is for Bell/Rogers/Telus/AT&T"

I do know that I run a mobile speed test and the speed reported most of the time is faster than 3G with the $10 browsing. Also the phone displays 3G when on Speakout.
Last time in the US I didn't use T-M but Ekit instead so don't know what it would be doing there.

FOUND this....
"The Nokia 5230-1c Nuron (Type: RM-593) Product Code 002P9H9

* is a quadband GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz device.
* It has WCDMA bands 850 MHz and 1700/2100 MHz AWS.
* The FCC designation for this model is LJPRM-593.

This will work on T-Mobile US 3G networks at 3G speed. It will also work on Wind Canada."
