Bought Rogers locked phone off craiglist for $230 brand new (Rogers stores won't sell me phones only).
Got SIM cutter off eBay for $5, punched it, put it in today.
Phone calls SMS text works. Incidates 3G.
Ordered $10 unlimited browsing. Took sometime to get it to work but it does work with APN setting provided on speakout official website. Kept trying until it worked (turning phone on/off, delete/re-enter APN).
Integrated Live Messenger doesn't work since UMB has no data.

I bouhgt a Nokia 710 rogers phone out right from rogers. Final Sale. Locked phone.
I use my SpeakOut SIM card having chopped it using a chopper I bought on Dealextreme.com.
No problems what so ever (I don't have a data plan) using speak out on this locked rogers phone. Everything works as normal, calls, texts, voice mail, etc.
HOWEVER, I can't recommend this phone. It's a total piece of garbage. While there are advantages and disadvantages I would radther stick with my older Nokia E63. A major left down, Microsoft totally missed the mark on this one. The simpliest things are difficult or impossible using this Windows phone. For example, syncing music right when you want it or sync anything completely wirelessly is impossible. Sending text messages through the computer is impossible. Tranfering files, tranfering contacts, etc, are all very difficult to do. Sorting your music into folders is not possible. A total garbage phone. Thanks that I bought the Nokia 710 and not the more expansive Nokia 900 which runs the same operating system. Look else where for a good phone.

your problem is not unique to this phone.
There is a metaphore change in the smart phone world since iphone. It wants to shake the link to the PC all together.
It is equally difficult to sync contact and/or music/photos to/from iphone/android.
And neither allows you to use the phone as a phone(via PC) like sending SMS. I used the C3 for that purpose(via PC suite) for a month and that was still the best.
So no, unless you go back to the old nokia S40/S60, there are no better phone for your mentioned issue.

That is one of the things I really like about my Android phones. I can set up an FTP server on my phone, and then easily transfer files back and forth via WIFI. I have a FTP server installed on my Nokia E71 and Playbook also for the same reason. Good luck getting an FTP server for a windows mobile device or iphone, but it would be nice if I am wrong.
