My wife had a monthly plan with MTS that just went off contract.
- bought her a nice android phone outright (but still locked to Rogers).
- bought a $10 SIM from 7-11, plus a voucher.
We activated the SO SIM using the phone with no issues. Once that was working, we ported our MTS #, which automatically closed the old account. We did this during a long weekend, but it only took 3 days.
The service displays as SpeakOut, with no issues so far. She doesn't have a data plan, since wifi is good enough. I'd like to hear how others are doing.

It is great now. A new law, which came in effect maybe 3 or 4 months ago, cell phone carriers are required to release their numb ers for porting within 2 days. I just ported one of my VOIP numbers to Speakout just this week, and it took 2 days. I certainly remember the bad old days usually dealing with Bell.
