Two days ago Nokia announced it latest crop of low-end phones. Speakout (and other prepaid companies) offer phones like this because they can sell them for a reasonable price and still be unsubsidized.
Maybe in 6-12 months we'll see one or two of them show up here. Don't expect them to be available next week or something silly like that, since these were JUST ANNOUNCED BY NOKIA and with all mobile phones it takes a LONG time for them to actually reach the hands of consumers.

One great thing these phones seem to share is amazing battery life. 🙂
One crappy thing these phones share is that none of them have a QWERTY keyboard! 🙁
Since Speakout just announced a data plan, my guess is that we might one day see the 2220 slider phone and/or the 2690 candybar-style phone, since they both offer (REALLY BASIC) GPRS data.
Or maybe we'll never see these phones. Speakout doesn't have a slider phone at the moment, but PetroCanada Mobility's 2680 slider is a nice phone (possibly better than the just-announced 2220) and if the price drops a little, it would be a great fit for Speakout. And the 2690 might be a good, low-end phone for Speakout, IF they can get it to be priced the same as the 1661 at $59.
And Nokia didn't announce a new flip phone. Speakout is using the solid, but old, 2760 flip phone. PetroCan also has the newer Nokia 3555 flip, but both the 2760 and the 3555 are listed as "While Supplies Last" on the PetroCan website. Can we expect a new flip phone to come in sometime in the new year? Anyone have any thoughts?

Regarding new flip phones, I saw somewhere else that they were supposed to be adding the 2720, around this time of the year. But I have no idea if there's any kind of confirmation of that. The 2720 looks kind of like an update to the 2760, but I wouldn't mind it - I'm hoping the stores near me magically stock them for the new promotion. I haven't seen anything new though.
