Hi there,

Last August my dad convinced my mom and I to get Android phones, and so he decided to add data to our Speakout plans. While we've connected to the network and can receive and send data just fine, neither of us have been getting push notifications when we're not on a wifi network. This is something frustrating when we've taken to using the TextPlus app for free texting; when we're out and about, we don't receive any notice we've gotten new texts unless we check regularly or hop on a wifi network. My dad has tried having us use ProxyDroid, but that doesn't work either. I've asked some friends who have Androids and they don't have that problem, and it hasn't worked even after getting new phones (we started with a Google phone and a Samsung Galaxy respectively, then we both switched to the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro a couple months later because we liked the slide out keyboard) so I'm guessing that it's potentially an issue with Speakout.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this, or what could be causing the problem?

Keep in mind that SpeakOut does not offer a data plan. Only a browsing plan. Do any of these threads help?

Just type in "push" in the search feature.

Like iamdrumming said, it's only a browsing plan. Only TCP ports 80 and 443 with browsing. I think Text apps use TCP port 5223 for push notifications which Speakout does not support.

Here's my workaround that I use to text with my kids for free. It's not elegant but it works:

I set up 2 separate contacts of myself on their ipods - one for send and the other for receive. The send contact points to my actual Cell phone number and the receive contact points to my textme (or textplus) number. Using Textme app on their ipods, I instruct them to always use the send contact for sending out text to me, and they will receive replies from me in the receive contact.

It works because incoming text to speakout is free and my phone always gets the notification with standard SMS. Similarly, when I send out text, textme works over the browsing plan using TCP port 80.
