I bought an used unlocked, jailbroken 3GS iphone. Originally it was locked to Rogers. The original owner unlocked it to use FIDO. The phone works well with my SO sim card. But I want to restore it to its factory state because (i) I know Rogers phone works with SO, (ii) I cannot upgrade to a newer OS, (iii) the web browser does not work--I suspect because the phone is jailbroken. I am sure restoring the phone is easy. But I think after restoring the phone, it will need to be activated (probably by Rogers?). I just don't know how I can activate the phone. This is the reason I have not restored the phone. If anybody knows anything about this, please let me know. Thanks.

If you restore to the latest firmware, the phone will once again be locked to Rogers. Thats not a problem for you if you use it with Speakout. When you do the restore the phone will connect to Apple's servers and authorize the phone. No problems there because it is a Rogers phone and is after all running on the Rogers network. However, there are a couple of downsides. If you get the urge to jailbreak again, it will be more difficult because the baseband will be updated along with 4.2 Also, there have been two major issues that have been affecting the 3GS model when upgrading to 4.2. Many users have reported that their phones will randomly shut off when a phone call exceeds the 4 minute mark. Also, there have been a llot of complaints about instant loss of battery life with 4.2. Check the apple discussion boards for more info.

I'm not sure exactly what firmware you are on so it would be a good idea to let me know what you've got before you go any further.

As for your not being to access the web, have you installed the Speakout profile using Apples iPhone Configuration Utility?

Thank you for the info. It's comforting to know I can always restore the iphone and still be able to use it.

My firmware version is 4.0 (8A293) , modem version 05.13.04. I got this info in Settings--General--About. I think this is what you want.

Using the info on this forum, I installed the Speakout profile using Apple iPhone Configuration Utility But Safari still does not work. Mail is working. Any ideas?

If you are getting email, then your data is working. I would assume that some jailbreak app is blocking it, probably "Safari Download". You could try restoring it through iTunes to 4.2, or you could download 4.1 hereā€¦

On a mac you hold the option key while clicking "Restore". This gives you the option to select a firmware from your computer's directory. For Windows : Hold the shift key and then hit the restore button.

The only jailbreak app on the 3GS is Cydia -- as far as I can see on the screen. Also, the YouTube app, that was already installed when I bought the phone, does not work.

I just installed the free Opera Mini browser and it is working nicely. Considering what you told me (the problem with 4.2 shutting down phone calls), I will hold off restoring the phone until some other major problem arises, hopefull not.
