Yes it will. It will work on the 2G network. Some people have had 3G working on SO, but until we hear from the official site, SO is a 2G provider. Also, SO does not currently offer a full fledged data plan, just an unlimited browsing package.

As far as I am concerned (Downtown Toronto), SO runs on the 3G Rogers network since we use it since February on three devices (iPhone 4, 5 (4 before that) and iPad 2 3G) without problems and fairly fast (6-11Mbps download).

Older posts state that 3G was switched on in many major cities (that Rogers covers) earlier this year. Obviously I can't speak for other cities, but Toronto is fine and St John's as well.

And yes, you can use SO on any unlocked phone that supports the GSM 2G / 3G network. I also had it running on an HTC One X without problems.

However, you will need to set the APN manually (or via unlockit.co.nz for iDevices) - instructions can be found via Google.

Thanks a lot to all.

I am going to buy a used iphone 4 to try the unlimited browsing.

Still have some questions to ask.

1. Does the mobile hotspot tethering function of iphone 4 work well with SO?

2. Where can I buy the SIM cutter?

3. If I can get the microSIM card, can SO switch it to my phone number?

Thanks

1. Discussions about tethering is not allowed. Tethering is against the Terms on the official page, so naturally it is against the rules here.

2. Ebay.

3. Just call customer service to port your number to SO.

thanks a lot. It's pretty sad that tethering is not allowed.

For 3. I am using SO right now,but you know the SIM card is bigger than iphone need.

The normally SIM card can not used on iphone if I don't cut it.

But if I have another microSIM with iphone 4, can SO transfer my OLD card information to the new microSIM card? In this way, I don't need to cut my current SO SIM card.

I doubt that SpeakOut can / will transfer any numbers from anywhere to anywhere ... The reason why SO is so cheap is that they keep services like this to a minimum. Hence no precise bill with numbers called, texts send as well etc.

Btw, I would think that any phone booth can cut your SIM as well if you give them a fiver! The advantage of buying a cutter is however that you usually get adapters from Micro to Standard SIM with it (I did with my Noosy cutter) so you can switch if desired.

You can transfers any number to SO long as you have the information they requested. I have done that with Bell, Roger, Telus, they all worked within 2 days.

To transfers out of SO, you talk to the other provider.

Jeez, what do you want for 10 bucks a month? It's not a data plan, it's Unlimited Mobile Browsing and it's just great the way it is.

Hi All, thank you so much for all your reply.

I still confused with data plan and Unlimited Mpbile Browsing.

What's the difference? Sorry, I am newer to ask so simple question.

And I should state my another question:

Right now, I am SO user, if I get a new phone, can I just ask SO using the new SIM instead of the OLD SIM for my SO number. Not port my number. Just use the new SIM.

As I know, you can change you SIM card for one Phone No. by yourself online at Rogers.

Actually, it can happen any time if you lose my phone, then you have to use the new SIM.

Data means you can stream video/audio, like VOIP, Skype, watch Netflix, FTP, and anything else that requires a steady stream of data. You can also do web browsing with data.

Unlimited mobile browsing, (UMB) of which Speakout provides, is intended just for browsing. And as such, Rogers set up a web proxy to restrict Speakout solely for web browsing. Depending on the phone and OS, some applications can get around the proxy restriction by running as a web application. Thus the confusion between unlimited mobile browsing and data.

Your account is tied to your SIM card, not your phone. So if you swap the SIM card to another phone, your account will also swap to the new phone, because the account is tied to the SIM card. If you want to add UMB to the existing account, you can talk to a Speakout representative, or add the UMB option from the Speakout web site. If you want UMB on a new SIM, you have to activate the new SIM, which you get a new phone number, and then add the UMB.

Hi, can you please confirm that 3G speeds still present in Toronto? Im planning on getting SO UMB (the $30 value plan) with iPhone 5. I know that it still only allows port 80 and 443 only, but better than nothing! Please confirm - thanks
