Does anyone have a source or have tried to unlock the C3 ? I know it is a relative cheap phone but it means my need as most of the place I need to go to has GSM which it should work nicely(as it is quad band).

If it's anything like the other recent SpeakOut phones, it is not possible to unlock. It uses the newer encryption.

As the C3 is actually a Rogers phone, i believe it can be unlocked using services like "cellunlocker". You can google it to get some web sites that unlock phones. I haven't tried unlocking any SO phone, but many services have a money back unlock Guarantee. You can always buy one off the internet already unlocked, but you will pay a premium for it.

I just tried Cellunlocker and submitted the IMEI as a Rogers-locked phone and I came back with a NOT FOUND answer. Still trying out other options.

Anybody out there know of a successful unlocker?

Did you get the IMEI off the back of the phone behind the battery or by keying in *#06# ?

I've never tried but there shouldn't be any reason it can't be unlocked. I know that a SO sim will work in any Rogers locked phone but will a rogers sim work in any SO phone? If not there may be some other programming in the phone that is specific to SO. I don't know any unlocking site that has speakout as a carrier option.

Checked the label in the battery compartment, label on the box and *#06#. They all say the same thing. I tried a couple other unlockers I've used before and they weren't able to provide code.

One interesting development: The box for the C3 says Nokia C3 Ztar; and similar labelling was shown for the 2220 and 1661 (e.g. Nokia 1661 Ztar). Thus, it's likely (although still an unproven speculation) that Ztar (7-11 and PetroCan) phones could be locked differently than Chatr or Rogers now.

I'm glad I didn't go the C3 rout now.

Aside from sending it away to have it cable unlocked, I don't know what to suggest.

Cable unlock is hard to find because this is a Nokia BB5/SL3 phone.
If anyone can suggest a BB5/SL3 unlocker in Calgary, it would be appreciated.

Otherwise, I'll have to resort to using a Turbo SIM and see if that'll work. A Polish phone forum has indicated that TurboSIM doesn't work with the C3, i.e. it'll accept the SIM but will show no signal. I'll have to see what happens. I ordered a TurboSIM via ebay and I'm waiting for its arrival.

I shall report back to you all once it is here.

mosquito_R: I have a feeling you wasted $3. It would be nice if I was wrong. I have a Bell Nokia 2730 which has similar locking mechanism, and it would unlock, but could not get the radio working. I hope that is not the case for the C3.

@bridonca:
I hope I didn't waste the $5 (how'd you get yours for $3??), but anyway, here's what I also read:
http://www.kittyforums.net/sho.....o-sim-card
(sorry for posting link to another forum, but it's an informative guide)

In this thread there's a how to perform CPR section for Turbo SIM. I know it's for Japanese-market phones but I hope this may work for those who got screwed over by their locked Nokias. Perhaps you can give the CPR technique a try and report back on how you've done with your 2730?

Thanks!

Chimpanzee,

I bought a Roger's Nokia C3 last Christmas because SO was not offering the C3 at that time. I want to use my phone while travelling in the USA so wanted to unlock it. I was able to get a lock code from a local retailer for around $25 + HST. I took my phone in but I'm sure they will work with you by phone or e-mail. Go to this website for more info.

@RJ_SNAH:
The thing is, most code unlockers nowadays depend on access to a phone provider database, in your case, Rogers, which is quite easily accessible. The 7-Eleven C3 is not in the Rogers database and that's why it's hard to find an unlock code. I tried a few unlock providers already.

Bottom line is, if the C3 I have is a Chatr or Rogers phone, unlocking will be super-simple and cost on the order of about $10. 7-Eleven C3, much more difficult.

Update from me: I traded my SO C3 with a colleague who has a Rogers C3. Bought an unlock code for the Rogers C3 and now I'm set. This week the Rogers C3 is on sale at BestBuy for $70, so add about $10 for unlock code and you'll have an unlocked phone for $80. Of course, it's still the boring slate grey colour.

Once my TurboSIM arrives, I'll still test it on the SO C3 if possible and report back.

SO C3 + TurboSIM = FAIL.

That's what I got when I tried this morning. Thus, I'm confirming bridonca's experience with his Bell 2730. By the way, the TurboSIM I got was the black coloured one that works without cutting the SIM.

For a fee, some service providers will even give you the unlock code for your phone. There are also third party companies that provide cell phone unlock codes for a fee that ranges from $5 to about $25, depending on the model of phone you have. i will suggest the website ClassicUnlocking.com which is doing good service …..you can approach this website.
