So I have been an SO user for about a year now. And I have been thinking of switching from my Nokia C3 to an unlocked iPhone 4S from the Apple Store. I have been reading/searching many websites, including this forum and I just cant get some things into my head (confused). So my main questions are if SO will work with an unlocked iPhone 4S? I already have cut down my sim card into a micro sim card, so that shouldn't be a problem...I have also read that I need to install the iPhone Configuration Utility, So I wondered if I would still need to do that with the unlocked iPhone 4S? I also have been planning on buying the Speak-out Unlimited Browsing plan and I have read that some features are blocked now? So I would like to know which features would be blocked. Would the Mail app work? The built in Maps app? The weather App? The built in YouTube app? and the Appstore/iTunes? Also what kind of connection would I be getting Edge or 3G?
Thats all

Mike, there shouldn't even be a decision about switching it should be done.
SO will work with an unlocked iPhone 4S.
You need to install the SO profile with the iPhone Configuration Utility so your data works, having an unlocked iPhone makes it possible to connect to the SO network.
With an iPhone you need to get the UMB plan or it turns from a "smart" to a "dumb" phone, lol.
Don't sweat what apps work and what doesn't cause about 90% of the apps you try and want will work which includes Mail, YouTube, App Store... And for $10 a month you should be grateful for what your given, cause I am.
I was getting a 3G connection pulling in about 2.3 Mb/sec, the ping times where a little high but very usable.
Just give it a try, it's pay as you go.

An unlocked 4S from the Applestore is a little bit of overkill in my opinion, and at over $700 for the phone it is far to pricey for what you will be able to use it of on Speakout. Consider buying a used iPhone 4 that is locked to Rogers for between $300-$350. The benefits of the 4GS, specifically Siri, wil not work with Speakout anyway.
The previous poster mentioned that Mail and the Appstore apps work with Speakout. Not completely true. Mail only works with Gmail accounts set up on Exchange, and the appstore will allow you to browse, but not download apps.
The functionality of the iPhone is limited at best over UMB on Speakout. Notifications dont work. Siri doesn't work. Facetime doesn't work. Messages doesn't work.
If you are happy with the basic functions of the iphone, then the UMB plan is amazing, just don't expect all the bells and whistles your friends have!

Exactly what he said.
Pick up a rogers locked 4/4s (knowing siri will only work on Wifi), get a SO/Petro SIM, activate, cut down to microsim, subscribe to UMB, visit unlockit.co.nz to download APN settings for SO/Petro. Done.

The full benefit of a 4S is when you're on wifi, shooting video or photos. .
Maps work on SO, as does Safari, Rocket Radar, FB and Twitter, news apps, bar code scanners, calendar when synced with Google Calendar and Gmail when using Exchange. It's far above having a basic phone, but not as good as being with someone who supports higher end iPhone apps like iMessage.
I've been using SO on iPhone since the 3G phone. I'm more than happy with it, it suits my needs and then some.
You get what you pay for, and this is excellent value for money.

I'm using an iPhone 3G, which I think was $225 on ebay 11 months ago. I got one that was forcibly unlocked, which killed the GPS so I gave it to my daughter and got another one locked to Rogers with a functional GPS. It turns out I never use the GPS.
I find the internet quite slow and the iphone screen pretty small but usable for occasional use, email and looking up an address or phone number. Really nice to have no worries about going over a plan and being charged an obscene rate for an extra GB. Also no worrying about losing or breaking a $700 phone. I am rather surprised my iphone has survived my pocket for nearly a year. Incidentally, there are a lot of iphone 3G cases available on ebay for less than $2.

Thank you guys for the responses... Never really had a chance to reply. Basically I got what I wanted which was the iPhone 4S and also the Speak-Out Unlimited browsing add-on. And I have to say, I am actually happy with the decision that I have made. Love the iPhone functions, apps, etc and I love the Unlimited Browsing add-on. So overall score for the iPhone & Speakout 10/10!!!
