Hi Everyone

Can I use my Telus HTC Desire (HSPA) on the Speakout network? I didn't want to waste time (and $$) if it wasn't possible.

the phone part should work fine. If you want to browse pages, that should be good also. If you want to do other internet stuff, you kind of have to jump through hoops and deal with proxies, and the Android platform does not make it easy to do.

It should work since I've used a unlocked Telus HSPA Motorola Milestone on SO - no issues with talk and text. With UMB, I can definite browse after adding the APN info. I never played with the proxy stuff to see if I could get other apps work on it though.

Thanks for all the help.
Well i went ahead and purchased a nokia 1616, got it set up, then pulled the sim and placed it in the Desire. I now get a "sim service provider unlock pin" request. I entered the 4 digit pin I set up and it rejected it. It says it needs to be an 8 digit pin... i never set up an 8 digit pin. Do I need my phone unlock pin again? I'll have to dig around and find it if that's the case.

Yes, it seems like your phone was either never unlocked, or a software update re-locked it. You'll need the 8 digit code to unlock it.

Obviously, your Telus phone has to be unlocked before it will work with Speakout. I'm wondering why you bought the Speakout phone and not just the $10 sim card.

Anyway, it you do get it to work as a phone, then you will have to put some money into your account, minimum $25 and sign up for the 'data' plan. You can do this online.

Good luck with this.

Thanks iam.
I found my unlock key and it worked out... something must have relocked it as you said.

jimbo... the phone was on sale for $20 and the sim card was $10. I got $5 in airtime with the phone (0 with sim only) so really it only cost me an extra $5 and I end up with a backup phone in case of emergency.

I took advantage of the $100 top-up and got the bonus $25 before the end of April so I should be good for a few months now.

Next up is settings... but I have found quite a few postings on this matter so I should be OK.

thanks again everyone, your help has been greatly appreciated.

Now it makes sense why you bought the phone!

The setup described on this link worked for me:
