I am thinking of getting a phone on the 16th. I would really like a gsm unlocked. My preference is the 2760. Of the 3 lower cost phones- 1208,2610,2760 which are gsm unlocked if any?
Thanks

I heard someone say that some of the Nokia 2610 were locked.

Even if it wasn't locked, I wouldn't get that phone anyway - get the 1208 instead for the same price.

I heard someone say that some of the Nokia 2610 were locked.

ISTR also that some, maybe all, Nokia phones sold by 7-11/SO in the US are locked.

Bylo, You are correct.

SpeakOut USA phones are indeed locked. I have one, and it is a Nokia 1600. Also, it is also locked to the area code it was originally activated with.

For instance, I bought a SpeakOut phone package outside Buffalo, NY. The area code there is 716. I managed to get another SpeakOut USA sim, but in area code 727.

As soon as I put in the 727 area code sim in my phone (which was activated in area code 716), the message on the screen said "SIM not valid". Even though it was still a SpeakOut USA sim, it would not work.

I managed to get another SpeakOut USA sim card from 716 area code, and it works fine. So, it seems the phone is not only locked, but locked to the particular area code it was originally activated in. But that is just for SpeakOut in the USA.

Also, when you want to change your area code with SpeakOut in the USA, they will just send you a new sim, free of charge.

Are the Canadian SO phones, specifically Nokia 1208, unlocked for sure?

Yes, they are unlocked. I have a Nokia 1208 myself.

Nokia 1680 is locked. Its the new addition to SO, so we can expect all new models from now on to be locked to SO & Rogers. Yep, rogers sim card works, but Fido doesn't.

I emailed Speak Out customer service about whether the 1680 is unlocked or not and they said it is unlocked.

OK, so I rechecked again. Put the fido sim, turned on the speakout nokia 1680 phone. Shows "Phone restricted" and a red stop sign flashes. There is an option "undo", I press that, it takes to a screen where i can input numbers, which i guess is the unlock code for the phone. If not, Then some one pls provide that numbers. Otherwise I have to keep on using my old beater Fido phone.

From HoFo

Confirmed with my unit! I have a bunch of foreign, active SIMs to try... It is LOCKED! If all 1680 from SpeakOut are locked, then it has bucked the trend with lineup up to date. Remember, the only exception before 1680c is some of the 2610 reportedly locked to Rogers / SpeakOut.

1680c is a BB5 model, which cannot be unlocked easily with the DCT-3/4 code calculator.

Looks like Speak Out lied to me in the email. Oh well, not the first time 🙂

So are all speakout phones now locked or only some phone ? I know that the 5130 and the 1680 are locked but would a new 1208 still be unlocked ?

I noticed this thread is old. Does anybody have current information? I am waiting for the offer Nov 16. Ideally i would like to get the 2760. Is it unlocked? As i understand it with purchase of a $100 voucher i'll get a $59 credit towards a 2760.Are there any SO phones offered now that are unlocked? thankyou

I would guess that the newer models are all now locked. If in doubt, you can always call the SpeakOut customer service number.

So the next question would be..Which of the 4 phones is considered "newer models"? The 2760? I'll call the SO rep as you suggested. Ususally people on this forum know more accurately than the SO does.

They are locked. The email I got says due to their source requirements they have no choice.
