Hello,
What a great site! Thank you! I am looking at switching to the 7-11 / Petro Canada service.
Anyway, what I wanted to know was, if I'm using an unlocked iPhone - does the GPS service run off of what
Petro Canada calls "unlimited mobile web browsing" service?
Also, has anyone hooked this service up to their laptop to use it as a mobile web access device?
Thanks!
A

The GPS generally is a piece of hardware that uses satellites to get a fix on your location. It then sends that information to a map program. So the GPS does not use your data plan. The GPS certainly would not be using voice minutes either.
There are exceptions though. To get a quicker fix, the GPS software will scan the available cell towers to get a rough location, and the GPS fine tunes to a more accurate fix. That uses your data plan. Also, if you map program does not use off line maps, it will also require a data plan.

I have used the following method – pre-caching map data with my iphone4 using a wifi connection – when I was in Europe. The Maps app/GPS locator worked quite well.

if you buy tom tom for the iphone, you can get gps offline without using ANY data
of course for android there is sygic (the one i use after realizing that there is no tom tom app for android), which provides similar functionality, be warned, it is just as functional as tom tom on iphone, but less sleek and polished.

The iPhone Map app does not function at all with out data service. I am unsure if other GPS apps will work through tower triangulation as bridonca mentioned. I would expect that they will not work.
Just to clarify - the iPhone map app DOES function perfectly fine without data service. And the GPS does not require data at all. However, you do need to get the maps (for GPS blue dot to appear on) onto your phone. You can load up the maps in advance over wifi, and then use the GPS function on the pre-loaded maps (including scaling, panning, etc to any "view" that you pre-loaded) with no wifi or data at all.
I got my iPhone planning to cut down my Speakout SIM, but haven't gotten up the nerve to cut it yet. Turns out my iPhone can do most things without any SIM at all! I use the map app for navigating all the time, including driving from Toronto to Vermont, Iowa, Georgian Bay, etc. The maps loaded up on wifi stay loaded on the iPhone for a long time. There seems to be some limit to how much you can pre-load, which I have not fully determined, so you won't be able to keep all your maps indefinitely (though I would rather keep that than some of the music if I had the choice!). The only thing you DON'T get is the ability to get more detail or change to a vastly different route on the fly. If you didn't plan to stop in Village A and preload the close-up maps of that town, you won't be able to get the extra detail without data. If you got off the area you preloaded, you won't see the map -- but the blue dot will still be there, correctly positioned relative to the part you did load.
