hi am currently with koodo at the moment. i am finding that i am not using it enough. i am looking to go with speakout or rogers prepaid. i know that if i go with speakout the start up cost is going to around 85.00 for the phone and the airtime. if there is any other carriers that you would go with?

The Nokia 3710 should work fine if you can unlock it. I do not know if you can configure the APN settings to get the data to work though, because Koodo does a job on locking in the APN settings with Nokia phones. But if you intend to use the phone for voice, you should have no problem once unlocked.

One other option to consider is a President's Choice mobile SIM, they cost $10 in which $10 of airtime is included. The only real downside is that you need to top up to $100 to get a year's service.

You could also consider checking out the Buy/Sell/Trade forum here. There are quite a few users selling new, unactivated SpeakOut SIMs, and new Nokia 1661 phones, for about half of the $85 new price. (I expect these people took advantage of the special deal SpeakOut had last month, giving away a free Nokia 1661+SIM card if you bought $100 in airtime.) You're going to need a SpeakOut SIM card anyway, whether you use your Nokia 3710 or not, and 7-Eleven doesn't sell the SIM cards by themselves. Depends on whether you're really set on using your 3710, or don't mind switching to another phone. You can always try to sell the 3710 to offset your costs. The Buy/Sell/Trade forum also has people selling SpeakOut SIMs by themselves.

thank you for the info. i'm looking for the option that is going to save on start up cost going with another carrier because i have to pay off the rest of the tab when the final bill comes in after cutting the service with koodo. do you know any good websites where you can unlock codes for your phone?

I have been doing some research, and I see the Telus/Koodo Nokia 3710 is one nasty phone to unlock. Your best option is to pay off the tab and sell it on kijiji for a loss. The cost is just too high to unlock it and use on another carrier. And let it be known you were another customer that got screwed by Telus. Yeah, I agree, it sucks, but at least you got company.

it is going to be a very painful lesson switching over to speakout in the end but it will be worth it in the end. i called all over the city and there is one guy who will be able to unlock the the phone for 30.00. if that don't work i will take the loss and sell the phone on kijji. i hope the unlock code works. i will keep you posted if it works or not

For $30, see if you can also get the phone debranded so you can regain phone features Telus was nice enough to disable.
