Hello, I want to replace my Nokia 1661 because I use it mostly for texting and I find it very hard to do with phone. I was wondering if a phone from China (dealextreme.com and focalprice.com have several) would work. For example, something like this

what do you guys think?

It should work according to specs, but I would still not touch it with a 10 foot pole. Too many of these Chinese cell phones work too poorly to be worth your time and effort. Examples like bad components, horrid user interface, poor fit and finish, poor reception, incorrect specs make for a bad user experience. Unless you can touch, feel the phone, and play around with it, I would stay away.

I totally agree with Bridonca. Chinese phones are notoriously cheaply made, and not worth the aggravation.

"* 1-Year Manufacturer's Warranty: this warranty is offered directly by the manufacturer. Should the item become defective within the manufacturer's warranty period (physical damages and damages caused by incorrect usage excluded), customers may send the unit back to DX's Hong Kong office. DX will help forwarding the item to the manufacturer for repair or replacement, and will look after the progress. The customer will need to cover shipping fees both ways."

Thanks for the advice, I was hoping against hope that somebody had a good experience with a similar phone. In defense of dealextreme, they are good to deal with (they can't be beat for replacement chargers + electronics accessories), free shipping, etc. But the phones aren't that cheap, so I won't take a chance on getting something that might or might not work well.
Ok, so here's the thing, I still want to replace the Nokia 1661 for myself, and possibly get another phone for my husband (who's on a Telus pay & talk, complete rip-off). My needs are: slide-out or touch keyboard (or something that makes texting super easy), under $ 100 (I know, I'm cheap!).
And it would be a super bonus to have something with Wi-fi. I don't plan on going on a data plan anytime soon, but I find it super handy to have something to check my emails when I go out of town (I currently borrow my son's ipod touch for those occasions, but he gets a bit annoyed at times!).

I was crowing about the Rogers Nokia C3, which happens to be compatible with Speakout. The C3 seems to have what you are looking for in your price range. I am sure there is another sale coming up! https://www.speakoutwireless.ca/speak/phone-features/rogers-selling-nokia-c3-prepaid-for-89-99/

Newegg sells some nice nokias, The 5230 caught my eye when it was $130. They regularly have sales on phones also. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/P.....t%20Phones

Why don't you try the Chatr Samsung Gravity for $75 at Chatr? It's a slide QWERTY phone. My daughter is currently using a Chatr Nokia C3 with Speakout SIM so I am guessing that all Chatr phones work with Speakout SIM.

Ooh! I took your advice and just ordered a Nokia C3 from Rogers (don't have a Rogers dealer where I live, I checked everywhere, Walmart had a couple of phones but not the C3). It should take a week to get here, will keep you posted. My plan is to try it out with the sim from my phone, then if everything is ok, go ahead and buy $ 100 airtime from Speak out to get the sim for this phone (which will be my husband's). And if I really like it, I'll get one for myself as well. Thanks everyone!

yeh, I'd stay away from a knock off iPhone. At $120, I'd spend a few dollars more and get an older genuine model. I just sold one here for $150, and there are lots out there if you keep your eyes open.
