I recently signed up for SpeakOut and am very happy with my service in Ottawa so far. I thought I would share my story because I did a lot of research before switching and still wasn't 100% sure it was going to work with my phone.
I have only not received a signal once, outside Carleton Place in the country. Worked in Renfrew. So far great coverage within the city.
I am using an iphone 5 locked to rogers and the SIM card worked instantly. I had to change my APN settings to get my data plan to work, which you can't do manually with a locked iphone. You can do this online through this site: http://www.unlockit.co.nz/unlockit/
I also ported my number from Rogers pay-as-you-go and it took less than 24 hours.
Very happy (so far). Would recommend for anyone who doesn't regularly use there phone for voice calls. Unlimited txting is great. I am using the $35/month value plan with 100 minutes and 500 mb data.
Also, I originally ordered a full size sim card and cut it down to nano sim size to fit the phone (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1428694/microsim_template.pdf). Works perfectly.
