I agree.
But it doesn't even need to be a GSM phone. It works with AWS Wind-type phones as well, which support the GSM frequencies on 2G which is good enough for occasional voice use (and all we're really entitled to anyways)
I've been running a SpeakOut sim in my Wind phone for months and it works just fine. Wind will even give you the unlock code free after 3 months of service!

I have two pretty decent / high end phones on Speakout now. With data working on both, my monthly bill with both of them is still less than a rogers, fido, bell, telus bill for one phone per month. I'm pretty happy and I don't abuse the data.
I used to work in networking for an ISP, something I know, when anomalies start happening with data usage on the network, net admins implement restrictions. Stay low key and don't over do it and there's little reason for network admins to go through the process of updating all their servers with more code to restrict customers from certain features. It cost time and money to fluidly inject changes without having some adverse affects on legitimate (rogers) customers.

i am a VERY happy user.
I have been using speakout primarily for data since octoberish of last year.
I have spent a grand total of $85 in that time. $30 of which is still in airtime and $10 of which went to buying the sim card.
If I were to estimate my total data usage I would say its probably in the 100gb range. I use a LOT of netflix on my app and when the data was wide open dec and jan I would not even bother using my wifi when at home. I figure that is one of the big contributers to me running up a large data sum. I like to think of it as my christmas gift from speakout. 2 months of unlimited 3g data no strings attached.
I shudder to think of the kind of fees I would be paying if were on a contract rate with the big providers.
Just my data overages alone every month would pay for a house. I average about 30gb a month.
that would be 5 gb for $35 on rogers tablet plan plus 2 cents for every mb over the 5gb limit. That would be approximately $550 a month.
I think its fair to say I am getting my moneys worth through speakout and am a VERY happy camper.
