I have had my 905-399-xxxx SO number for almost 2 years and since day one I have had an annoying issue. Whenever I call from the cell phone locally to a 905/416/647 number (all local) it will show up on their call display as:
----------------
Long Distance
1-905-399-xxxx
----------------
(I have tested this with my home 905/work 905/2 cellphones 647/416)
If someone tries to call me back by just dialing from their call display they will get the automated message that "This is not a long distance call". So everyone that has to call me back has to remember the number without the 1- prefix and dial the number manually to call me back which is a huge hassle.
I have had this number for 2 years and do not want to change it.
I have called SO and they stated that I am not being billed for long distance and all of my calls are local. The number is apparently registered to the Oakville region and I call Mississauga and Oakville with the same results. I have <1yr old sim backup cell from SO with a 289 number and calling 905/416/647 shows up as:
----------------
289-218-xxxx
----------------
Without a 1- and "Long Distance" identification and calling it back from any location through CD goes without any hassles.
Is there anyone that could assist?
Thanks

I can't help you with the specific problem but it does bring up a pet peeve of mine with the way Bell's landlines work. If you're in 905, say Oshawa, and call someone in 905, it may or may not be LD. (Ajax isn't but Mississauga is.) If you dial 1-905... because you don't know and don't care (you may be on an unlimited LD plan) if the call is local, Bell's Silicon Sally will tell you and force you to hang and redial. What a waste of time.
Much better to use the cellphone protocol where a leading 1 means, "if this is LD then I consent to the LD charges and if it's not LD, don't hassle me, just put the call through."
If Bell did that for landlines neither of us would have to be annoyed with them about this issue.
BTW some Call Display implementations allow the caller to edit the number on the display, e.g. to delete the leading 1.
