I have a new SO SIM card, never activated, purchased with a phone. I never put it into any phone, so it is not activated yet. I sold my $100 voucher, so I only have the SIM and the phone. I know the phone is working fine, because I am using my Rogers prepaid SIM in it now.
Now here's my question... Is there a certain time period by which I have to activate my SIM in order for my account to be still working and to get my $5 airtime. I suspect it doesn't matter, even if I do it in 1-2 years time. I just want to be certain and not have to rebuy the SIM and the phone when I actually need it. I am still using my leftover Rogers credit so I don't need my SO sim now.
Am I right in assuming that I can activate my SIM anytime I want, even if it's months or years from the date of purchase? The SIM should be activated by doing a first call, but I never even inserted the SIM in any phone yet.... It's brand new.....

I just talked to a CRS and she said that I should activate the phone within 180 days of purchase so it doesn't go into expired status. Or she said even after 90 days the acount can expire. She said most of the phones come pre-activated, that only a certain number of phones have to be actually activated by a first phone call, which I find strange.... because if you got a phone that was activated weeks before you bought it, you would not get your full 365 days of airtime expiry and you could be charged 911 fess for the period even prior to your phone purchase.... ?
What do you guys think?
One other question, if I activate my phone now, is my $5 airtime good for 365 days? What happens after 5 months after I lose all my airtime because of the 911 fee, does my account get suspended if I don't top-up by a certain time after that?

The 365 day countdown starts when you make the first call.
Don't wait too long before you activate it, don't bother waiting more than a couple of months. Speakout might think the SIM is lost and cancel it.
Just activate it, and if you don't use it, it will only cost you approx. $1 per month - so after 5 months you'll have to top it up. It doesn't get cancelled right away, you have some time after you run out of money.
If you don't think you'll be using it for over 5 months, then just sell the SIM. You already sold the $100 top-up card, and you'll probably get $20 for the SIM, more if you wait until January, so you might break even.

I'm not saying this as "matter of fact" but as far as I know, 7-Eleven does keep track of each phone delivered to each store, so they know when to rotate stock, and which phones are selling and not selling.
The also know which sims are being used up in each store, and which are not, etc. So as Big Ang said, a sim might get deactivated after a while.
