airtime and service expiry

When I check my balance, I get the message that my airtime *and* service will expire on a certain date (365 days after I activated the phone).
What does it mean, that the service will expire? Do I then have to call customer service to activate the phone again?

No, you have to add more airtime before that expiry date, to continue service. You only have to activate a phone once. After that, you just keep adding airtime.
