i call my cell number from skype and press star when the machine picks up, then it asks for my password like normal. but when i enter my password, it just asks for it again.
my voice mail is set up and can be checked from other phones. just wondering why it wont work through skype.

I tried from Skype Out and found it was a bit fussy as to when I could put the # in and successfully get the voice mail to take my password.
Out of about 6 tries it worked 4 and dumped me saying "I'm sorry you are having trouble -- goodbye" twice.
The results were the same from Skype Out whether I was trying my SO VM or my Rogers VM so it would appear to be a problem with Skype passing on the password digits.

Sorry for the kind of dumb question:
What is the procedure?
Do you dial the voice mail box number: : 1-877-643-7786
Then after the message, you enter:
123-xxx-xxxx (which is your phone)
then #
then your passcode then #
All without waiting any prompt ?
I'm not sure if the passcode should be followed by a * or a #.

1-877-643-7786 only recognizes SO numbers from Ontario (or perhaps Ontario and farther east). If your SO number is from anywhere west of the Ontario -- Manitoba Border, the system can't find it from that toll free number.
To check your VM from Skype Out, you do need Skype Out paid credits.
The quickest way to get to your voice mail is to call your own cell phone number, whether you are calling from your SO phone, a landline, or Skype Out and let it ring until the message starts. Then press # and follow the prompts. It should just ask for yor password at that point and that is all you need. (No # required after the password.)
If you are calling one of the SpeakOut Voice Mail pickup numbers from the Home page of this site (FAQ 15), or either of 403-978-9990 for a Prairie SO number, or 604-618-1188 for a BC SO number, you will have to enter your SO number followed by the # key just like the prompt says, then the pasword when prompted. If it goes dead when you enter your number followed by the # key, you can't get your VM from that particular number. (That is what happens if I call 1-877-643-7786 and enter my Manitoba SO phone number.)

Rogers must have tightened things up.
If I call 1-877-643-7786 and enter my Victoria BC Rogers phone number, it works just fine to get VM from my Rogers account.
If I call the number and enter my SpeakOut (Manitoba area code 204) phone number with the # key, everything goes dead and if I leave it long enough, it dumps me.
So the easiest and surest way to get your VM still seems to be calling your own SO number and waiting for the message and then pressing #. (you can speed up the process by turning off the power to the SO phone so the call goes directly to Voice Mail. Calling your SO number works whether you are calling from the SO phone itself, any other phone, or Skype Out.

A toll-free 1-877 number (no long distance) or a local access number is always nice to have when I travel to another city.
I tried the local number and after enter my 10-digit phone number and #, no prompt at all !
Why do they even disable the local access number for us !?! It's not like people spend time on the VM box.

That is what will happen if the VM server recognizes your Caller Display number.
The various numbers that Rogers provide for Rogers customers are provided for folks who are paying Rogers for service. Any services we can access from our SO phones are gifts. We aren't paying Rogers anything for them. Speakout pays Rogers for the "Official" services that are listed on the SO site. The good folks on this forum share the little bits of "extra" we have been able to find that works over and above a very basic service we pay SO for. I'm happy to get voice mail included in my phone service at no extra cost, and I'm happy to share what I've found about accessing that voice mail for less than 25 cents per minute. I also recognize that every tip we share here for bypassing the airtime charges etc on SO cuts into SO's revenue.
My gf had a cell phone from Primus who also sell service on the Rogers Network. Absolutely nothing beyond the bare minimums worked from Primus without being fully billable. Nothing from the Rogers network was accessible from her Primus phone. Things like voice mail were not included in the basic plan -- they were only available if you paid extra for them. The net cost of her "plan" on Primus was close to $1.00 per minute with Call Display being her only paid option -- no voice mail at all.
The users of this forum are doubly blessed. We are all using SpeakOut Wireless which provides a really good value for our money compared to most if not all other Cell Phone providers in Canada. We also are using this forum which shares ideas and assistance from a great pool of readers at no charge.
