I don't know if everyone is aware but the new CRTC Wireless Code came into effect on Dec 2nd. As prepaid customers of SO/PCM, there's a couple of "new rights" we have, including
- having our phones unlocked immediately if it was paid for in full (which we have)
- receiving a notification when roaming in a different country, telling you what the rates are for voice services, text messages, and data usage
- having a minimum seven-day grace period in order to “top up” our prepaid card account and retaining our balance
The last one is the most important one. I assume that means if you miss the top-up date, you now have an extra week to top it up and still get to keep your balance.
As for the unlocking thing, that's good news except there's nothing stopping any of the wireless providers from charging their customers whatever they want if we request an unlock. That sucks, when you consider you own the phone outright already. (I won't get on my soapbox here but you get the idea...)

It is a crying shame the phones are locked in the first place. It just means throwing valuable phones in the trash. More precisely, it should be illegal to charge the same monthly rate for phone service if you bring your own phone to the party. People are pretty much forced into a plan to buy a locked phone, a new one every contract term, since they have to pay for it anyway.
Unlocking? Since the phonecos claim they are allowing you to use the phone free (despite charging for it every month), they don't even have to let you keep it at the end of the contract.
The government should put a stop to this cheating and ban locking as a huge waste of valuable phones. Never mind limiting contracts to 2 years.
