Error sending SMS messages

I have an unlocked iPhone on a SpeakOut (Canada) SIM with a number ported from Rogers. I was having some problems with sending SMS messages after the porting, so here is some information that helped me fix the issue. Some of this is iPhone specific, but much of it should apply to all phones.

The short version is if you're having problems sending SMS messages, make sure your SMS message centre number is correct, and call customer service if you've recently ported a number from another carrier.

The message centre number for SpeakOut is the same as for Rogers, +17057969300. You can view this on the Nokia phones in your sending profile in message settings in the text message app (this number may be FAQ worthy). On an iPhone, you can set the proper number by dialing *5005*7672*+17057969300# and pressing call. The "+" is important, dial it by pressing and holding 0. You can view your current setting on an iPhone by dialing *#5005*7672# and pressing call. Note that the correct number to set will be different for SpeakOut in the US.

As it turns out the main problem I was having was that some of my account settings were not correctly set after porting a number from Rogers. I tried putting my SIM back in my free Nokia phone, and could not send text messages from that, so I called customer service. After they asked for my phone number they couldn't find my account at first. They then asked for my original phone number and put me on hold for a while and eventually my account was fixed. After turning my phone off for a while and back on again, I now have working SMS.

Very helpful. I just unbranded a Rodgers Sony Ericsson w810i and couldn't figure out why I could receive SMS but not send.

I had to set the service centre number. For the w810i here you go...

> Messaging >Settings > Text message > Service centre

Be sure to prefix with the international "+" sign before the number.
