Do you mean if you buy a US-based Speakout sim? SIMs from Speakout Canada will not work in the US.

Your idea should work. You'll probably incur long distance charges from Rogers for forwarding the call, and perhaps call forwarding charges as well from Rogers, on top of the per minute charges the US sim will incur. You'll have to compare that with the insane roaming charges that Canadians pay and see which one is cheaper.

why not just change your VM greeting to include your US number and ask them to call or text you on that and you can call them back.

Thanks very much!!!
Can I buy a card in Canada and put it in my iphone and then have people call me in the US on the new number and can I call back to Canada on that cards cheaper rates. Or do I wait until I am in the states to buy the card there and use your method of changing my VM on my fido number.

It would probably be easier to buy the sim in the states. Walmart is a good place to start. When you get the sim activated and a number, then call your Canadian voice mail number and change your voicemail message.
