I have a Novatel MiFi 2372 set up to use the SO data plan. It took me a long time to set it up. But now that it is set up I can connect any other WiFi device to it i.e. iPhone,iPod, iPad and laptop.

So . . . can you give us all details of how you set it up to allow tethering. I'd like to do the same.

As I said at the top of this thread I have a Nexus 4. Now running stock KitKat 4.4 (i.e. NOT rooted)

I played around with all conceivable settings I could find and finally this worked.

Profile: Speakout
The APN settings that worked for me are: rogers-core-appl1.apn (thats app lowercase L 1.)
All other settings left blank, no PW etc.
But your phone may be different.

While Opera can help reduce data usage if you use one of the compressed modes like Off Road, it's not browsing that uses up data so fast. With Android it's all the integrated Google Services that burn data at a crazy rate. As soon as you connect you'll take a hit of several hundred Kbytes, and usage will continue in the background at a high rate as long as you are connected. With a tethered device you can't even shut down background data usage on an app-by-app basis.

I made sure I set my android device so that background data is restricted. That helped a lot in making the most out of my quota. I now cannot accidentally update my Google Play apps though 3G anymore, which is nice. I wish I could get rid of that stupid notification though.

I certainly did notice the difference off road mode made to my data consumption. It is a good feature.

I did mull over using an ad blocker like as away to save me some bandwidth, but it does not seems ads use that much data for the most part.

You can stop Google Play from downloading updates when not on WiFi. It's in the Google Play settings. But personally I turn off update checking entirely in Google Play, so there are no notifications. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'll check for an update if and when I have an issue with an app. sf-smile_gif
