You're taking a gamble. SO phones are preactivated. They have a phone number assigned when the SIM is inserted. That phone number is printed on the box that the phone comes in. So in principle SO or 7-11 can track which SIMs (phone numbers) are in the field and, if the clerk records the phone number at time of sale, which ones are in customers hands. I would activate within 90 days of purchase just to be safe. In any case you have to apply airtime vouchers to your account within 90 days or else the airtime credit will expire.

I'm thinking of buying a phone from SpeakOut to use with my Fido SIM card.
If I never put the SpeakOut SIM card in a phone, I assume it won't activate the service. My question is, how long can I keep it like that (say, maybe I want to activate it next summer, will it still be OK ?)
I wouldn't chance it. I have seen Speak Out deactivate sim cards before, and once they are deactivated, your are SOL.
