our 3 years contract with rogers will expire next month. Was wondering what is the cheapest way to port our rogers phone number to speakout.
I googled for some hints, can anyone verify if they are correct ?
1. it is hard to exactly time the porting of your number on the day your contract expires.
2. you have to inform rogers 30 days in advance if you want to port your number, otherwise they will charge you some fees ?
3. if you port your number before your contract is up, you have to pay an early cancellation fee, even if you called ang gave Rogers 30 days notice
4. if you port your number a day after your contract expires, you will not get charged an early cancellation fee but will only get charged for 1 month
It seems that the most cheapest hasslefree way might be to call Rogers 30 days in advance and inform them that you want to switch your phone to prepaid when the contract expires. Then call the day before your contract expires and make sure that its switching to prepaid. Get the $10 prepaid.
Then just port your number within that 30 days. Total damage is $10 + tax

Probably, but it doesn't have to be an exact date. Say your term with Rogers ends 30Jun and you give them 30 days notice today, i.e. you agree to pay them to 30Jun. Now buy a SO phone and airtime. Sometime in late June, say the week of 22Jun, call SO and tell them you want to port your Rogers number to them.

You should confirm that with Rogers when you give them 30 days notice.
3. if you port your number before your contract is up, you have to pay an early cancellation fee, even if you called ang gave Rogers 30 days notice
Not if you're prepared to pay Rogers' monthly plan rate to the end of the contract since you have have complied with the terms of your contract, i.e. you haven't cancelled anything early.
4. if you port your number a day after your contract expires, you will not get charged an early cancellation fee but will only get charged for 1 month
Yes, however see my comments above.

There's no need to switch to prepaid. Give them 30 days notice as they require, then port out before the end of the contract. They don't lose any revenue and neither do you.

Okay so if you inform rogers 30 days before your contract expiry date that you want to port your number out and you are able to port it on or before your contract expires, you will get charged 1 month extra. Which in our case would be $40.
The solution is to switch to prepaid when your contract expires and just load it with $10. and since your are in prepaid mode, you can port your number anytime without penalty. You will only lose at the most $10 (if you did not use it up and leave a few cents before porting)

I ported my rogers monthly contract over to SO without giving 30 days notice. My contract expired on June 2 and I know the Rogers bill comes out on June 10. I received my invoice and I was not charged for an extra month. In fact the cellphone portion of my bill was -$8. I don't know what happened but I'm happy to be free of being locked into a contract.
Porting my number took 1 day but it was not long. Just happy to keep my cellphone number.
when does your contract expire?

That's not what I said. I said give them 30 days notice, effective the last day of your contract. Port out the number a few days before the contract ends. Robbers will, of course, bill you for the last month of your contract but you'll be able to use your phone and airtime for most of that month. There should be no extra month's charge because there is no extra month.

Maybe someone can help us. We want to port from rogers to speakout but we dont want to pay too much on fees ie extra month, penalty etc. Basically our contract will expire on Nov 5 2009, but our next billing cycle is Oct 22, 2009.
1. If we port on Nov 5, 2009, Rogers csr says the monthly fee paid for Oct 22-Nov 22 wont be prorated, so basically we are out more than half a month (our monthly is around $38)
2. if we port between now to Oct 22, we dont have to pay for next month but we will get charged a $20 cancellation fee plus tax, and no proration for the fees we already paid up til Oct 22.
Has anyone switched ported out of Rogers before and Is there a better alternative ?

the $20 dollar cancellation fee is calculated taking the remaining months of your contract and multiply for $20. if you are in your last month then the cancellation fee should be zero on top of your normal monthly charge for the last month of service.
the best time to port would be on Oct 22
my contract is up on Nov 2nd. i got my SO phone during the half off handset promo and am waiting ti'll then end of Oct to activate my phone and port my number.
the most i'll be out is a few days service i paid for

As I see it chiewable, if you port before Nov 2nd you will be charged the $20 x months remaining cancelation fee. And if your billing cycle is like kat at Oct 22, then you will also be out 1 month charge because according to kat, Rogers does not refund.
Kat, have you tried switching to prepaid instead ?

i talked to rogers earlier today and they told me no cancellation fee because i'm in the last month of my contract (there are not more remaining months after this one). i would still have to pay for service until Nov 2nd so all i would lose is a few days of paid service from when i port my number

Hi
So I called again last night and the csr has a different answer from the first one I talked to. He verified that our contract will end Nov 5 but
1. If we port on Nov 5, 2009 since thats our contract end, we wont get charge a cancellation fee and the monthly fee paid for Oct 22-Nov 22 **WILL** be prorated.
2. if we port between now to Nov 5, we will get charge a $100 cancellation fee plus tax ! I said the other csr said only $20 a month, he said that there is a minimum of $100 cancellation fee..
So now I am not sure which one to believe. I like scenario one for this csr but I like scenario 2 from the previous csr.

Hi
Just called rogers again and got some more answers. (my contract ends on Nov 5)
1. Porting on Nov 5 or after is the safest best, no cancellation fee and the csr I talked to verified that since they charge me one month before on Oct 22 for Oct 22-Nov22 he said that that monthly fee will be prorated ! hurray !
2. porting before Nov 5 will result in $100 cancellation fee since that is the minimum.
lastly I asked about the part where on the last month of your contract you can cancel your account. Here is what he said.
* yes you can cancel on the last month of your contract (30 days before contract end) but you will need to give 30 days notice before so that you will not get charged a cancellation fee.
* porting however is different from canceling since you need to have your account active to port, so the one month before contract end with 30 days notice does not apply to porting. if you port your number before Nov 5 you will get charged the cancellation fee !!!
so the safest bet he said was to port on or after Nov 5.
